Under the direct supervision of the Chemical Hygiene Officer, the Research Safety Specialist will serve as a liaison between research personnel and Research Safety Programs, which include Chemical Hygiene, Biosafety, Radiation Safety, and Laser Safety. The Research Safety Specialist will perform lab safety reviews and create outreach materials for the implementation of research safety programs and the promotion of safety culture.
The Research Safety Specialist will assist research safety program managers in designing deploying safety related training to research staff, both electronically and in person. The individual will also assist the Chemical Hygiene Officer with the implementation and maintenance of the Chemical Hygiene Plan and with chemical inventory management.
The Research Safety Specialist will assist the Biosafety Officer in conducting risk assessments for research involving biological materials and animal research. The individual will also assist with the implementation of software solutions for the management of research safety programs.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
Education and Experience
-Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering or other scientific field.
-At least two to five years' experience in research safety, with experience in hazardous materials, chemical inventory or inspection.
-Valid California Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one within three months is required.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
-Experience in Field Research Safety or implementing Field Research Safety Programs.
-Experience handling hazardous materials
-Experience performing inspections and managing a chemical inventory
-Experience in searching for and interpreting Safety Data Sheets
-40 hour HazWOPER with 8 hour annual refresher training.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $60,000 per year. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
