OVERVIEW

This is a paid internshipa minimum of32 hours per week,Monday - Thursday,
7 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., from May - September2020.


KITSAP COUNTY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Kitsap County supports internship programs that provide work experience for students in an accredited post-secondary institution that is related to their course of study. The internship program is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principals and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.

Stormwater Water Quality Internship:
The Stormwater Division in the Kitsap County Public Works Department is seeking motivated individuals for an intern position within the Stormwater Division's Retrofit Program. The successful candidate will learn about the process of evaluating existing stormwater facilities for retrofit, drafting plans, and writing permits. There may also be potential opportunities for design and survey work. The position will include both office and field work.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Minimum Qualifications :
  • Must be able to show proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution at the time of internship. If the internship occurs during the summer, the student may provide proof of summer or fall enrollment.
Desired Majors and Class Level:
  • Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Sophomore(2Y) - Senior(4Y)
Desired Skills:
  • Basic working knowledge of Word, Excel, Office and AutoCAD programs
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
Knowledge and Abilities To Obtain Over the Course of the Internship:

Increase Intern Knowledge of:
  • Kitsap County'sStormwater Division Retrofit Program
  • Researching project requirements and completing permit submittals
  • Using AutoCAD Civil3D software to perform basic drafting tasks
  • Performing site visits, evaluating existing stormwater facilities, developing retrofit designs
  • Coordinating projects with other agencies
  • Assembling materials lists
  • Working with construction crews to ensure safe, accurate, and timely completion of projects
  • Performing basic surveying, potentially including both a laser level and a GPS system
Increase Intern Ability to:
  • Communicate technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Work effectively within a team
  • Work with stormwater staff and managers to solve problems
  • Work independently or with limited supervision
  • Prioritize tasks and accomplish them in a timely manner
  • Follow appropriate engineering standards and methodologies
Physical working conditions could include:
  • Light hiking into remote areas, walking/wading on uneven ground, kneeling in the stream, bushwhacking, climbing over large and slippery logs and rocks while carrying heavy equipment, working in traffic to assess stormwater facilities
  • Loading and unloading equipment and supplies into and out of vehicles
Supervision:
  • Intern will receive supervision from an administrative superior as assigned.
  • Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted practices.
  • Work is reviewed through status reports, meeting and observations.
Driving Requirements:
  • The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment.The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy. This position is categorized as:
    • Category 1: Driver operates County-owned vehicle.

  • The successful incumbent will or may have unsupervised access to children under 18 years of age, a vulnerable adult, or a vulnerable person, or access to a secured/confidential facility or computer system(s). As a result, Kitsap County will be conducting an extensive criminal background check by law enforcement agencies, which may include fingerprinting.
