Newlands Reclamation Project Mapping Technician

Recruiting For: An immediate vacancy in Carson City, Nevada.
The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources is
seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mapping Technician (Water Commissioner) for
the Newlands Reclamation Project Water Rights Mapping Project. This is a non-classified, full-
time position within the Division of Water Resources funded under a federal grant.
The POSITION: This position is part of a team that is working under a federal grant with time
sensitive mapping goals for mapping the water-righted lands with the Newlands Reclamation
Project. The mapping technician will analyze the base water right information, changes in the
use from those base water rights, and documentation of retirement or loss of water rights in order
to then populate a digital database and create a geospatially accurate polygon map identifying the
location of water rights within the reclamation project. The technician will digitize and edit
polygons in GIS and populate spreadsheets and databases. The technician will also perform
QA/QC review procedures on completed polygons and data entries and resolve any
inconsistencies or unmappable features discovered through the review.
Skills Required: Must have a willingness to learn and use Autodesk Map 3D software, already
have previous, formal, training in the ESRI ArcGIS software, possess ArcGIS mapping skills and
the ability to use Microsoft Office suite. Must be able to work independently with minimal
supervision, as well as the ability to work well in a team environment in collaboration with
engineers, partner agencies, and Division staff. Must be professional, well-organized, and self-
motivated. The position requires the ability to safely drive a four-wheel truck, including the
ability to change a flat tire and perform assigned tasks in a wide range of weather and off-road
ground conditions. The job also requires the ability to interpret maps to find, and then locate by
GPS, specific features in the field.

Governor Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications for this position require an Associate's
degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Geographic
Information Systems or closely related field and two years of professional level experience with
mapping, ArcGIS, and basic engineering principles.
Special Notes: Candidates are required to possess and maintain as a condition of employment a
valid Nevada driver's license.
Approximate Annual Salary (DOE):
Employee/Employer Paid Retirement: $47,188.80 - 69,739.20
Employer Paid Retirement: $41,175.36 - 60,844.32
This is a non-classified position equivalent to Engineering Technician IV - Grade 33.
