This Summer Playgrounds Activity Leader position is being recruited as a multi-position posting and multiple candidates will be hired from this recruitment. The purpose of the Summer Playgrounds Activity Specialist position is to provide Recreational Games, Activities (outdoors), Sports/Athletics Programs and Outdoor Recreation to youth enrolled in our summer programs.

Other relevant duties include but are not limited to:
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant's needs and safety issues.
  • Possess the ability to work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions.

Physical Requirements:
  • Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants while adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, stretching, and reaching in rugged terrain.
  • Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
  • Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant's needs and safety issues.

90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy:
  • This posting may be used to fill other vacancies in other divisions/work locations within the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department. Decisions on assigned selection will be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.

Work/Location Schedule Notes:
  • May be required to work during special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
  • Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.

Work locations to be assigned and determined by the hiring manager.

North Playground Site Locations:

Central Playground Site Locations:
  • Bartholomew Park
  • Chestnut Park
  • Givens Park
  • Ramsey Park

South Playground Site Locations:
  • Civitan Park
  • Dick Nichols Park
  • Dove Springs Park
  • Garrison Park

Candidates who are selected for an interview may be required to complete an assessment of their skills.

Driver's License and Certifications:
  • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Drier Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Pay Range
$15.75 per hour.

Days and Hours:
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM
  • Variable - up to 40 hours per week
    Evenings, weekends, & holidays may be required.
  • May be required to work during special events outside the normal hours. Dependent on the site, programming hours may vary and include Monday through Friday between 8:30 am - 5:30 pm (includes a one hour break)

  • Possess American Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR , and AED , or the ability to obtain certifications within 30 days of hire. Training and Certifications are offered by Parks and Recreation.

Other preferred experience:
  • Experience in the areas of behavior management, inclusion, and/or adaptive recreation.
  • Experience communicating information clearly and concisely in person, by phone, email, etc. while exercising tact, patience, and discretion in a professional demeanor.
  • Experience maintaining and establishing working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Excellent writing/composition skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to multi-task.
  • Experience supervising and leading others.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

  • Develop, modify, and teach program activities to accommodate various ages, abilities, and interests.
