Police Dispatcher I
University Police

Salary Range: $3,096-$5,602/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-Time, varies-rotating, weekends, and holidays required; days to be determined; non-exempt classification.

Essential Functions: The incumbent is responsible for maintaining effective and efficient communication between the university law enforcement headquarters, university police officers, parking officers, other outside emergency and law enforcement agencies, and the public. The incumbent receives and records information quickly and accurately from complaints, requests, and signals from a variety of communications equipment such as: radio transceiver; 911 system; Justice Department Interface Controller/California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (JDIC/CLETS); telephones; university fire and burglar alarms; emergency signaling devices; and other telecommunications equipment. The incumbent utilizes PC-based Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to enter research and retrieve information. The incumbent must be able to react quickly and think clearly in emergency situations, evaluate information received, coordinating the proper action to take. The incumbent in this classification is distinguished by the critical nature of police dispatch work and the specialized knowledge and skills required to perform this work.

Required Qualifications & Experience: Valid California Driver License. The incumbent typically has one year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency within the last ten years. The incumbent must possess the ability to use phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively, and learn the use of applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases. Incumbents must have completed or be able to attend and successfully complete, the Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Dispatch Course. Incumbents who, upon hire, do not possess a P.O.S.T. Dispatcher Certificate will be required to pass a written test related to essential dispatching skills. Additionally, incumbents must successfully pass supplemental P.O.S.T. requirements for dispatchers such as background check, physical and psychological examinations, drug testing, and related requirements. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who may apply for the position.

Desired Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or a related field.
