Human Resources Management

Salary Range: $2,791 - $5,053/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; non-exempt classification. Temporary appointment expires on/or before one year from the date of hire. Appointment may be extended, may become permanent.

Essential Functions: Under the general supervision of the Manager for HR Data Operations and Payroll Systems, the Payroll Technician I will initiate, process, and complete payroll/personnel documents for specific actions and categories of Cal State LA employees where the transactions tend to be reasonably standardized. The incumbent will select and apply appropriate policies and procedures according to CSU guidelines such as the Uniform State Payroll Manual, Personnel Information Management System (PIMS), Public Employees' Retirement Manual, and applicable state and federal laws, education codes, and collective bargaining agreements. The incumbent will: run queries to review, audit, reconcile, and correct data; respond to payroll requests and prepare basic reports and worksheets; perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately; execute tasks using PeopleSoft HR system or related software; and perform other related assigned tasks in solving/resolving less complicated situations.

Required Qualifications & Experience: Equivalent to one year of general administrative experience in payroll and human resources recordkeeping and data entry, which has provided the below knowledge and abilities. The incumbent will have the proven ability to: accurately perform mathematical calculations; organize a high volume of work effectively; validate and identify discrepancies and errors in data; calculate and reconcile variances to maintain data integrity in systems; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; interpret, apply, and determine appropriate actions by utilizing policies, procedures, programs, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, educational codes, and collective bargaining agreements; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; exercise tact, courtesy, and good judgment in responding to others; exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; and meet strict guidelines. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with Cal State LA. Desired Qualifications: Experience auditing payroll timesheets, leave balances, and payments; experience with PeopleSoft, PIMS, or CalPERS systems; knowledge of unions and collective bargaining agreements; experience with levies, garnishments, and wage withholding orders; and knowledge of California and federal payroll processing regulations.
