DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director, Rose Float serves as the primary on-site, working administrator; Provide fiscal administration, direction, guidance, advising and management to the Rose Float program including the Rose Float Committee, Rose Float Club, and volunteers; manages the Rose Float Coordinator position, a Technical Advisor, Student Program President and Chair, and Rose Float Interns. The incumbent meets individually and as a staff for meetings, team building, personal and professional development, goal setting, and project implementation; ensure that the Rose Float Technical Advisor and students are prepared for all TOR inspections to include M1-Mechanical Inspection, T1-Maneuverability Test, A1-Animation Inspection, T2-Manueverability Test, A2-Animation and Over-Height Structures as covered in the official Tournament of Roses Float Manual; make process and strategic decisions for the joint program in conjunction and collaboration with SLO Rose Float Program Advisor; prepare program evaluations and a comprehensive year-end report. Provides leadership for the design and implementation of Rose Float assessment efforts; analyzes assessment data and makes recommendations; maintain communication regarding Rose Float events and activities to the DSA and university at large; serves as a member of the Dean of Students cluster leadership team; Function as an AIC (Administrator in Charge) for staff partners; and serves as additional MPP in adjudicating Student Conduct Cases. The incumbent oversees the day to day administration and operations of the Rose Float Program. Implement goals, strategies, programs, and services that compliments the strategic mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs; develop a working knowledge, interpret and enforce University policies as they relate to the mission and purpose of the Division of Student Affairs. Additionally, develop a thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures as they relate to campus organizations and the use of University facilities, state vehicles and equipment. Interpret these regulations to student groups and assist them in their program design, planning and implementation; prepare for and implement annual assessment plan to the DSA; and oversees both the Rose Float Committee and Rose Float Club. The Director, Rose Float serves as the primary liaison to the Tournament of Roses (TOR) for both Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Rose Float programs. This responsibility has been previously authorized in a letter of agreement by the two University Presidents from both campuses which is on file in the TOR liaison's office files. The TOR has very specific technical manuals and guidelines that this person must be completely aware of, and the incumbent communicates to the students, and works with the students to insure they meet all required deadlines and are operating within these guidelines as set forth by the TOR. Following TOR policy, all official announcements and requests for compliance are coordinated by the primary Liaison. These activities include accepting the invitation to participate in the Rose Parade on behalf of both campuses; preparing the float sponsor's update; ensuring compliance with the Float Participant Information regarding tickets to the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, guest luncheon, Queen and Court visit to campus, parade parking, Coronation Luncheon, Participant's Photo Day, Rose Bowl Kickoff Luncheon, float decorating sites, and post parade float viewing; develops float entry fact sheet, request composite judging scores, declaration regarding participation in the Rose Parade, and Theme Draft materials, which include theme, subject matter, builder, and unique feature; presents at Design Variance meetings to render information with students to ensure compliance with TOR policies; prepares and presents reports and updates to the TOR as requested; and when possible, attend official TOR board meetings and functions with the Director of Special Programs. In addition, the Liaison shall receive and process all technical Tournament requests and forms; coordinates activity with assigned TOR Liaison to ensure that this program continues the long-standing student tradition started with the 1949 float entry; represents Cal Poly float interest to other builders; and requests, applies for, and coordinates the distribution of the charitable grant from TOR for Rose Float scholarships awarded to students at both Cal Poly campuses. The incumbent is responsible for making recommendations to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students regarding the management and administration of the Rose Float budgets; implements annual budget projections and reports for the University; directs oversight and reconciliation of all Cal Poly Rose Float ASI and Foundation accounts, including the Joint account held with CAI Poly San Luis Obispo; supervises the procurement of necessary supplies, facilities, equipment and other materials in accordance with established University procedures; recommends to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students policies for the controls and maintenance of office equipment; and responsible for implementing fundraising, cost- saving, and efficiency goals for the department. The incumbent participates in Dean of Students staff meetings, cluster meetings, the Student Affairs Advisory Council, and in-service training sessions; assists with other programs offered by the Cluster, and as appropriate, Student Affairs Committees, and/or task forces as assigned or requested; and semi-annually leads Dean of Students cluster meetings, and participate in or lead division and cluster activities; Assists with departmental and University student development programs as needed; and collaborates with at least one academic college per year. The incumbent works closely and collaborate with the Director of Development in University Advancement with all matters pertaining to fundraising efforts for the Rose Float program. The Director of Development will take the lead on these matters with collaborative support from the Director, Rose Float Program; serves as the Advisor to the Rose Float Alumni Board in collaboration with Alumni Affairs and External Relations; collaborates closely with Director of Special Events & Projects to plan and execute special events and donor recognition for the Rose Float program; and performs other duties as assigned.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field and minimum of five (5) years management or supervisory experience. Minimum of 3 years of coordinating and implementing leadership programs, workshops and events, as well as advising student organizations. Experience hiring and supervising a diverse staff. Direct and demonstrated experience working with student organizations. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to manage professional staff and students individually and in groups on complex related matters; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Incumbents perform in-depth analysis of individual student or group problems of considerable complexity. Situations are analyzed thoroughly in search of sound solutions rather than being quickly conceived and/or utilizing standard techniques and devices. Incumbents must be able to readily identify problems and alternative solutions available without assistance from guidelines and formulas. Since analytical thinking must occur during person-to-person interactions, incumbents must analyze individual staff, student or group situations thoroughly, perceive the available alternatives and their implications and must formulate and verbalize this information with those present. Incumbents may also plan, develop and conduct Student Services related instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars. Excellent oral and written communication skills requiring relating well and communicating effectively with a variety of constituents, including high- profile leaders. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, on and off campus, serving in a leader role and as a liaison and representative of the Division of Student Affairs and the University. Ability to thrive in a team environment and collaborate with industry professionals in college development activities. Demonstrated working knowledge of Rose Float operations. Must demonstrate accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with a diverse population of constituents and colleagues, reflecting the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.

Minimum of 5 years of related student service experience in a public 4-year university or college. 1O+ years of management experience can be substituted for student service experience. Experience working in a higher education or non-profit setting desired. Familiarity with contemporary state and national issues and trends related to academic disciplines desired. Incumbents are assigned ongoing responsibilities and work without benefit of day-to-day assignments, with little or no management oversight. Incumbents are required to develop plans and approaches to situations where few precedents or guidelines exist. Likewise, incumbents must adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses, rapidly changing circumstances and annual turnover of student leadership team. Leadership emphasizes overall results and occurs on a case review basis. Both typical and unique cases encountered are subject to discussion and examination of alternate approaches and techniques to be used in the future. Collaborative, demonstrates commitment to all issues of diversity is preferred.
