Description San Mateo County Health is seeking well-qualified individuals for the position of Public Health Microbiologist I/II - Limited Term. There are currently two (2) limited term vacancies. The positions are in the Public Health, Policy and Planning Division and are located in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the job. The County of San Mateo's Health System is seeking an experienced Public Health Microbiologist I/II for its Public Health Laboratory. Under supervisory direction, the Public Health Microbiologist(PHM) performs microbiological and related laboratory analysis in the areas of bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, serology, parasitology, and water microbiology. The Public Health Microbiologistperforms routine and specialized laboratory tests, provides quality assurance support, resolves technical problems, and develops recommendations for new or alternative equipment or methods for overall process improvement. The Public Health Microbiologist II may serve as designated relief for the Public Health Microbiologist Supervisor when the latter must be absent from the laboratory. The ideal candidate possesses excellent multitasking and organizational skills; excellent customer service skills; a high level of professionalism; effective oral and written communication skills; the ability to follow procedures and demonstrate problem solving; and the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. In addition, the ideal candidate is detailed in documentation practices; has strong applied knowledge of quality assurance practices; and has basic computer skills. This position may be required to work flexible hours when necessary, including after hours, weekends, and holidays. For the PHM-I level successful candidates must have received the approval letter to train as a Public Health Microbiologist Trainee issued by the California Department of Public Health, andcompleted the 26 weeks of training in an approved public health training laboratory, necessary to take the state examination for certification. NOTE: This is not a Trainee position. SALARY PHM I:$41.78 - $52.22/hour PHM II: $44.23 - $55.28/hour This is a limited term, at-will position. Perform bacteriological examinations of water for evidence of contamination. Review and interpret test results and accurately report results in the LIMS. Perform quality control testing on media, stains and reagents. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment. Perform proficiency testing. Maintain inventory of media and reagents. Prepare and maintain accurate records and other documentation for laboratory tests, quality control, and equipment maintenance. Evaluate new and existing test procedures. Write and update standard operating procedures. Prepare and submit various reports for internal and external clients. Prepare test corrective and preventive action reports and perform related follow-up. Advise physicians and other clients on proper specimen collection, storage, and transport conditions. Assist clients in test result interpretation. Train and instruct personnel, student interns, and volunteers on testing, test interpretation, quality control, and safety procedures. Qualifications Licensure/Certification : Public Health Microbiologist I: Must meet the standards and qualifications for admission to examination as a Certified Public Health Microbiologist. Public Health Microbiologist II: Possession of a valid Certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California State Department of Public Health. Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
