We are accepting applications for the position of Plant Operator Grade I/II/III/IV. The current vacancy is in the Water Division. Positions are flexibly staffed and progression from one level to another is based upon the incumbent's acquisition of the appropriate Plant Operator certifications.

The Plant Operator Grade I/II/III/IV works under general supervision and is responsible for operating and maintaining water treatment plant facilities on an assigned shift. This position performs routine to complex maintenance work in the upkeep of plant equipment and facilities.

The ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrated an excellent work ethic, display integrity coupled with interpersonal and professional customer service skills. The candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively and perform routine to complex maintenance work. The candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Depending on assignment, duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Water Division
  • Operates pumps, chlorinators, chemical feeders and other associated treatment plant equipment;
  • Operates SCADA systems for the treatment plants and the distribution system;
  • Checks equipment to determine operating condition and makes necessary adjustments;
  • Maintain, repair, lubricate and service plant equipment;
  • Adjusts pumps, motors and other plant machinery;
  • Records instrument readings;
  • Receives chemical deliveries and changes chlorine cylinders;
  • Performs general janitorial and major maintenance and general repair work around the plant and other treatment facilities including painting, groundskeeping and other miscellaneous tasks;
  • Keeps logs of plant operations;
  • Performs membrane back-pulses, CIPs, MITs, fiber repares, as well as backwashes on filters;
  • Obtains, labels, analyzes, records and prepares reports on water samples as required by local, state and federal regulations;
  • Performs multiple laboratory analysis, including bacteriological analysis as needed;
  • Collects samples for laboratory testing; responds to customer concerns;
  • Inputs data into computers for reports; and responds to emergency after hour call outs on a rotating basis;
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned. May work shifts including nights and weekends.

Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school or its equivalent and education and experience commensurate with each grade level of certification as required by the state, which includes some course work in area of assignment.

License
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver license upon employment.
Certificates
  • Water: Possession of a Grade I, II, III, or IV Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Grade II Operators will be required to obtain the Grade III certificate within a 24-month period.
