This position has final responsibility for lab quality assurance, work product timeliness, lab safety, laboratory equipment and supplies, staff development and training, operational budget, and spending approvals within the laboratory. Job Description and Duties The Environment Section enforces state and federal environmental laws affecting California's natural resources, its communities, and public health. Attorneys in the section investigate and litigate a wide variety of matters concerning global warming, hazardous waste, Proposition 65, air and water pollution, natural resources conservation, and environmental justice. Under the direction of the Chief Assistant Attorney General and administrative direction of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Senior Assistant Attorney General (Senior Assistant) plans, organizes and directs the statewide work of the Environment Section within the Public Rights Division of the Department of Justice. In addition to the supervision of the section’s litigation and advice functions, the Senior Assistant serves as the Attorney General’s principal liaison and point of contact for legal services with the section’s clients; serves as technical and legal advisor to the Attorney General, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the Chief Assistant Attorney General on matters within the section’s legal program and on issues impacting the Department of Justice; and represents the Attorney General, state agencies, and state employees before the courts. The Senior Assistant develops policies and procedures with regard to the Environment Section. The Senior Assistant also consults with the Chief Assistant Attorney General in the development and formulation of litigation policy and program objectives; has principal responsibility for personnel management and employee utilization within the section; and provides direction and guidance to subordinates through supervising deputy structure. The Senior Assistant may personally assist subordinates in complex litigation; prepares strategic plans, reviews annual budget requests, performs Budget Change Proposals, forecasts workload; and performs ongoing programmatic monitoring and reporting functions. While the position’s location is specified as statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered in Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, and San Francisco.
