About the Opportunity THE POSITION The Deputy Coroner investigates and reports on causes of death that fall within the jurisdiction of the Sheriff-Coroner and assists with autopsies and post-mortem examinations. This individual also removes bodies from the scene of death and delivers them to the County Coroner facility. This position also keeps the morgue and autopsy room and equipment in clean and orderly condition. This position is subject to shift work, weekend, overtime, standby, and callback assignments. CAREER DESCRIPTION DEPUTY CORONER T his recruitment is open to the public beginning Monday, November 6, 2023 for a minimum of five (5) business days, and will remain open on a continuous basis until 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) on the day the Department's needs are met. THE DIVISION The Coroner Division is an investigative unit responsible for carrying out the statutory duties of the Coroner. Those duties include investigation into the circumstances surrounding all deaths falling within the Sheriff-Coroner's jurisdiction for the purpose of determining the identity of the deceased, the medical cause of death, the manner of death, and the date and time of death. Medico-legal death investigations are conducted countywide on all homicides, suicides, accidents, suspicious and unexplained deaths. Other duties include notifying the next of kin, safeguarding personal property, collection of evidence, and completion of mandatory records and documents. The Division is also proactive in the community, participating in programs geared towards preventing drunk driving and drug use; identifying consumer products causing fatal injury; domestic violence, child abuse and elder abuse; and providing educational services for medical, legal and law enforcement professionals. Other contributions to the community includecooperative relationships with non-profit organ and tissue procurement agencies to enhance the quality of life and save lives. The Division also collaborates with research organizations pursuing medical science advancements. General Duties: Conduct medico-legal death investigations of all sudden, violent, and unexpected deaths that occur within the County of Orange in order to determine the circumstances, manner, and cause of death, and the identity of decedents coming under the Sheriff-Coroner's jurisdiction; order autopsies performed by professional staff; and do other work as required. THE POSITION Under general supervision of the Identification Supervisor in the Central Identification Bureau, to learn to perform the duties of classifying, registering, searching and identification of fingerprints in the Automated Fingerprint/Biometric Identification System (AFIS/ABIS); assist other city, county, state and federal agencies with fingerprint and identification work; and to do related work as required. The classification of Fingerprint Examiner is an entry level classification in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. Fingerprint Examiners work under close supervision in the Central Identification Bureau (CIB) and receive on-the-job training. This classification is distinguished from the next advanced level class of Senior Fingerprint Examiner in that the latter is responsible for handling the more complex and diversified fingerprint examiner transactions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EITHER I Experience : The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in the class of Clerk II or a higher-level clerical class in the Alameda County classified service. OR II Experience : The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time clerical experience. Substitution : One (1) full year of study in a Police Science curriculum from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience. License : Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Special Requirements : Vision: Using both eyes, must have far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must have near vision, as measured by optometric examination, sufficient to perform fingerprint identification, classification and related duties. Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds. Must be able to type 30 words per minute. Successful completion of a thorough background investigation. EXAMINATION COMPONENTS THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS: A review of applications to verify possession of minimum requirements, including the attachment of a typing certificate with 30 net words per minute (wpm). Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications for the class will move onto the next examination component. A written examination, which will be qualifying only; pass/fail. Those applicants who pass the written exam will move onto the next examination component. An oral interview, which will be weighted as 100% of the applicant's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
