The City of Tustin Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking applicants for part-time Recreation Facilities Assistant. This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
This position, under immediate supervision, maintains the interior and exterior of City facilities to keep them in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
This recruitment is conducted on a continuous basis to meet the needs of the City as vacancies occur and may close at any time.
The Recreation Facilities Assistant is an entry-level classification assigned to perform facility maintenance duties at various City locations such as the Community Center, Senior Center, Family and Youth Center, Activity Center, and City Hall. The focus of this classification is on setting up facilities for meetings, recreation classes, and special events. The duties involve frequent interaction with the general public, including senior citizens, teenagers, and children who patronize the City's recreation facilities, and the employee must deal courteously and effectively with others and represent the City in a positive manner.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from a Recreation Supervisor. Technical and functional supervision may be provided by a Recreation Facilities Leadworker.
No supervision is exercised.

Individuals who are best qualified will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Interviews will be scheduled on an as needed basis. All candidates who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Moves and arranges tables, chairs, fitness equipment, and heavy objects to set up City facilities for scheduled recreation classes, City Council meetings, and other scheduled events; sets up audio-video equipment
• Opens facilities by unlocking doors, and turning on lights, security system, and air conditioning; secures facilities after use by ensuring doors and equipment are locked and turned off
• Monitors facilities for safety hazards; cleans up spills and clears walkways and doorways of obstructions
• Provides customer service to facility patrons by answering questions and providing information regarding facilities and recreation programs
• Assists with operation of special events such as Tustin Tiller Days and the Street Fair & Chili Cookoff; sets up and takes down booths and tables; delivers supplies and equipment; monitors event to ensure area is free of debris and safety hazards
• Assists with the maintenance of facility interiors by emptying trash receptacles and spot cleaning floors, windows, counters, sinks, furniture, and walls on an as-needed basis using a vacuum, mop, broom, and other cleaning equipment
• Assists with the maintenance of facility exteriors on an as-needed basis using a leaf blower, power washer, broom, and related tools
• Performs light maintenance duties such as replacing light bulbs, painting, patching walls, and performing minor repairs; reports serious maintenance issues to supervisor
• Travels to and from various City facilities in a safe and timely manner by driving a City vehicle
A combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification. A typical combination includes:
Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school; and one (1) year of experience working in a position that involved extensive customer service or public interaction.
Licenses and/or Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening. Required to work intermittent shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The position requires prolonged standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, climbing, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The employee is required to lift and carry furniture and equipment typically weighing up to 40 pounds when moved alone, and up to 75 pounds with assistance. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and coordination, and color vision in driving vehicles, operating equipment and using tools in a safe manner. Acute hearing is required when working around traffic and equipment. The employee may be subject to uncomfortable outdoor working conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity.
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use oral communication skills; work independently; and interact with the general public, City staff, and others encountered in the course of work.
The employee works both indoors and outdoors on a regular basis. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals. When working outdoors, the employee is subject to working in inclement weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet, at or below 85 decibels.
