Position

Under supervision, to perform a variety of nursing services in support of public and mental health programs and services; to assist with the planning and conduct of clinics; to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level in the Licensed Vocational Nurse class series. Incumbents are expected to be licensed or certified. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Licensed Vocational Nurse II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Examples of Duties

Assists with the planning and conduct of clinics; loads supplies and equipment and sets up facilities for clinics; disseminates educational information; performs basic health assessments and tests; gives injections; maintains and updates health and clinic records; cleans up after completion of clinics; may perform home visits; telephones participants to verify status; records lab work data into medical records; takes and records medical histories; consults with other nursing and medical staff regarding identification of medical problems and assistance with providing nursing care; forwards written test results; assists with local community contacts for participation in health programs and services provided by the County; attends meeting and conferences for development of nursing information and skills; completes required reports for other governmental agencies.

Experience:
No experience is necessary.

Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized course work in nursing related sciences.

License or Certificate:
  • Possession of a valid license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Psychiatric Technician in the State of California.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by date of appointment, a valid California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 25 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, chemicals, explosive materials, and infectious diseases; ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications, applicants may be scheduled for one or more of the assessments listed below. Passing score is 70% out of 100% on each assessment section. If only one assessment is conducted, the weight for that assessment will be 100%.

PLACEMENT ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST:
The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final grade on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight. In case this fails to break the tie, they shall be ranked in the order of filing applications.

Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. Eligible lists are generally active for a minimum of six (6) months up to a maximum of two (2) years. The duration of the eligible list is determined by Civil Service Commission Rules.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment with the County of Madera, a candidate must submit to a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, and related follow up testing as necessary. Designated classifications* are also subject to a medical examination, which includes a review of medical history. TB screenings and medical exams are administered by the Madera County Public Health Department and/or health care professional designated by the County.

Designated classifications required to submit to an employment medical examination generally include those that are physical in nature or as may be required by law.
