Definition and Class Characteristics PAID SUMMER LAW CLERK INTERNSHIPS *FOR LAW SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY* The Nevada County District Attorney's Office is offering student law clerk positions for the Summer of 2024. The summer law clerk internship is for law school students and recent law school graduates only. **This position is only open to certified law students** The District Attorney's Office invites students with an interest in becoming a prosecutor or working in the criminal justice field to apply. Position: Intern, Law Clerk (District Attorney) This position will report to the Assistant District Attorney or designated attorney/advisor within the office. Time Commitment: Up to 30 hours per week, during regular business hours (Monday - Friday). Intern duties and job duties may include: Assist with drafting motions, memos and briefs Assist with trial preparation and court appearances Assist with contested hearings Legal research Assist with filing misdemeanor and felony cases Assist with case summaries, docket notes and updating case management files Assist with jury trials, creating and copying jury instructions, assisting with jury selection Successful applicants will be subject to fingerprinting and background investigation. Functions of department: The District Attorney’s Office provides a wide variety of services to the citizens of Nevada County. First and foremost, we work to prosecute crimes within the county in accordance with justice. In addition, our office investigates crimes alongside law enforcement, assists victims and survivors of crime and works to protect the youth and help deter them from criminal activity. The office is is responsible for the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor offenses that are referred by law enforcement agencies. Examples of Duties APPLY NOW Knowledge and Skills Required Knowledge of: Standard office procedures, methods and computer equipment Business letter writing and report preparation Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations Functions and organization of municipal government Principles and procedures of recordkeeping Skill in: Working with and controlling sensitive and confidential information Performing responsible secretarial work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative Operating and using standard office equipment such as a word processor and a personal or on-line computer, scanner, facsimile (FAX), photocopiers and printers Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Education and Experience Required This position is open to law school students and recent graduates only. Enrollment in law school and possession of bachelors degree required. To be eligible to become a certified law student, an applicant must: Have successfully completed one full year of studies (minimum of 270 hours) at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the State Bar of California, or both, or have passed the first year law students' examination;Have been accepted into, and be enrolled in, the second, third, or fourth year of law school in good academic standing or have graduated from law school, subject to the time period limitations specified in the rules adopted by the Board of Trustees of the State Bar; andHave either successfully completed or be currently enrolled in and attending academic courses in evidence and civil procedure. Retirement The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.
