The Department:
Since 1896, Silicon Valley Power (SVP) has provided electricity for residents and businesses in Santa Clara. The Electric Department has a budgeted staff of 198 employees who provide such diverse services as operating, maintaining and dispatching electric service, engineering, system planning, administrative and financial management, marketing, customer services, power trading, outdoor Wi-Fi services and dark fiber leasing services, all of which work together to make SVP successful for the City and its residents.

The Position:
SVP is hiring for serval intern positions in various divisions. Please read through the descriptions below.

Engineering Division - Student Intern II/III
SVP's Customer Development and Program Management is responsible for the engineering for the electric utility capital projects and provides technical reviews and designs for new developments within the City.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Preparation of substation design and construction specifications
  • Project management support
  • As-needed engineering support
  • Document management
Candidates who possess an engineering degree or coursework from an ABET university and experience in AutoCAD is desirable.

Business Services - Student Intern III
SVP's Business Services is responsible for activities that support all divisions of SVP including financial administration and budget development (including capital projects and operating budgets), business process refinement/development, contract administration and related procurement practices. This position will provide the intern with an opportunity to involved with administrative functions that span across local government functions.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Formatting and compiling of documents such as contracts and public works bid specifications packets
  • Document management and tracking
  • Follow-up on outstanding issues based on task lists
  • Records Retention - Review of documents for renaming and filing, destruction
  • Assist with documentation of processes to support business activities
  • Data Entry, insurance, scanning of documents
System Support - Student Intern III
SVP Systems Support is the full-service cybersecurity, IT, and technology solutions team within the Electric Department of the City of Santa Clara. Interns in our group will have the opportunity to learn more about the general IT industry as well as critical infrastructure support for the electric grid. General areas of learning include, but are limited to: Voice-Over-IP (VOIP), Networking Infrastructure, PC Maintenance, Asset Management, Database Infrastructure, Application Management, Enterprise Support Strategies, Customer Service, and Cybersecurity.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with building/imaging new computers for users
  • Assist with computer lifecycle exchange for users
  • Assist in eWaste management of scrapped materials
  • Assist in troubleshooting issues on PC's, laptops, tablets, phones, VOIP phones, and Ethernet cable
  • Assist in printer setup, configuration, and troubleshooting issues for users
  • Assist in asset management tracking documentation and housekeeping
  • Assist in software deployment and troubleshooting for users
  • Answer phones and assist in ticket creation through resolution for users
Customer Engagement - Student Intern II
The Customer Engagement division works on behalf of customers on billing and rate assistance, provides information and rebates for energy efficiency programs and manages community events and communications to insure Silicon Valley Power customers have access to the full range of services provided by the utility. Interns will have the opportunity to learn all the ways the utility supports the community.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • General customer engagement support
  • Assist with financial and medical rate assistance
  • Energy efficiency, solar equipment and/or electric vehicle equipment rebate processing
  • Public outreach events (booths)
  • Special projects as available
  • Support communication pieces and newsletters, website design, etc.
Sustainability - Student Intern III
The Sustainability Intern III position would provide support to the Sustainability Program under the City Manager's Office. The Sustainability Program collaborates across all City departments to develop, support, and implement equitable sustainability and climate action related initiatives around energy efficiency, electrification, waste reduction, water conservation, clean mobility options, and more. In addition to incorporating sustainability into City operations and policies, the Sustainability Program provides services through community outreach, youth education, workshops, and presentations. In order to expand the reach and impact of sustainability efforts, the City also partners and collaborates with organizations like the Santa Clara Unified School District, local climate collaboratives, the County of Santa Clara and other neighboring cities, local businesses, faith-based groups, and other community based organizations.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Support development of a Sustainable Santa Clara Community Workshop Series
  • Support development and implementation of Sustainable Santa Clara School/ Youth Outreach Program
  • Support community outreach, events, media, and website improvements
  • Support with the City's Climate Action Plan (CAP) and other sustainability and climate related policy efforts
  • Support internal City efforts to meet sustainability related targets and regulations
  • Support sustainability related data and information tracking and reporting
  • Research funding opportunities for climate, sustainability, and environmental equity related projects
Positions currently open are for Student Intern II and III. Student Intern I's are encouraged to apply for future consideration should positions become available. As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
- Student Intern I: Current enrollment in a high school or an alternative vocational high-school working toward high school equivalency with the minimum completion of the 10th grade.

- Student Intern II: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.

- Student Intern III: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university for completion of a Master's degree.

Acceptable Substitution: None.

Student Intern I - $15.65 -$18.72
Student Intern II - $20.15 - $24.50
Student Intern III - $23.17 - $28.18
