Description: Job Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Engineering Advancement for the College of Engineering (CENG), with an indirect reporting line to the Associate Vice President for University Development & Alumni Engagement (UDAE), the Senior Director of Development is responsible for identifying prospects, coordinating and executing visits, and developing and implementing cultivation strategies that promote CENG's fundraising priorities. This position works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean of Advancement to strategically plan, articulate, and implement all advancement-related external relations activities to support the mission and vision of CENG and its constituent departments and programs.
Expectations and goals include the following:
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors for major, leadership and planned gifts to CENG. Effectively manage follow-up and reporting requirements in an appropriate manner while maintaining confidentiality.
- Discover and qualify new prospects for support of CENG with emphasis on prospects capable of contributing $25,000 and more.
- Execute a minimum of 150 virtual or in-person visits and submit 20 major gift proposals annually.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with on-campus personnel, including those in UDAE, to foster a team approach to achieve the external relations goals of CENG.
- Represent CENG and the University by outreaching to alumni, friends, parents, key volunteers, industry partners.
- Supervise and manage the Director of Development(s) for CENG. Provide support, leadership, training, and mentoring.
The role of the University Development and Alumni Engagement (UDAE) Division is to foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. University Development establishes and implements an overall advancement program, including coordinating fundraising, communications, government and community relations, marketing and alumni programs.
The College of Engineering (CENG) is the largest of Cal Poly's six colleges with eight academic departments and one academic program that offer 13 Bachelor of Science degrees, nine Masters of Science degrees, and six blended/joint BS and MS degree programs. CENG currently educates over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students and admission is extremely competitive. CENG is recognized as one of the premier undergraduate engineering programs in the nation and for its hands-on project and design-based learning environment. CENG operates under the leadership of the Dean of the College of Engineering, and a management staff consisting of Associate and Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, and Program Directors and employs approximately 50 staff and 200 tenured/tenure track faculty and part-time lecturers. Key Qualifications
Demonstrated experience and success in major gifts fundraising, marketing, planned giving, or other related professional field. Ability to thrive in an environment of change.
Education and Experience
Knowledge of the financial structure of donations, to include cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks and securities.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with diverse constituencies, both inside and outside the University, including: donors, faculty, staff and volunteers to ensure fundraising goals and priorities are met. Experience in developing relationships with key stakeholders.
Bachelor's Degree is required with at least five years of progressively responsible professional experience, including a minimum of three years in development, advancement, fundraising, sales or a related field. Bachelor's Degree with at least two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in development, advancement, fundraising, or a related field.
Experience in development, major gifts fundraising, donor relations, marketing, planned giving or other related professional field is required.
Higher education fundraising experience.
Previous capital campaign, major gift cultivation, and/or donor solicitation experience. Cal Poly
