Position Summary

The Political Science Department and International Security and Conflict Resolution have 17 full-time faculty, 11 part-time lecturers, 7 Teaching Associates, more than 600 undergraduate majors, and approximately 20 graduate students. CIAS has 8 core faculty members and 5 associated faculty members and about 10 undergraduate majors. The Center for Human Rights has 15 associated faculty members. The Political Science department offers undergraduate courses in the four main subfields of the discipline - U.S. Politics, Political Theory, Comparative Politics, and International Relations. In addition, it offers two undergraduate certificates in Public Law and in Human Rights. The graduate program offers a general political science M.A., with options for advanced certificates in Comparative and International Studies and Public Policy.

The Administrative Support Assistant II (ASA II) will serve as the receptionist, provide assistance to department visitors, and clerical support to staff and department programs. They will answer two incoming phone lines and monitor voicemail, prepare and sort mail for faculty and department chair. They will serve as Telephone Coordinator for the department and attend campus telecom/datacom coordinator meetings.

The ASA II will prepare a variety of materials, such as letters, memos, announcements, reports, forms, and documents of various kinds for faculty, in hard copy and electronically. They will establish and maintain internal spreadsheets for graduate admissions process, track progress of graduate applications, prepare files for committee review, and answer all questions related to graduate admission process. The ASA II serves as Inventory Coordinator for the department and utilizes campus inventory software to maintain and track equipment, computer inventories, and supplies.

With lead direction from the department Administrative Support Coordinator II, the ASA II will process travel documents for faculty domestic travel, maintain a departmental budget tracking system as well as a budget tracking system for individual faculty allocations, maintain a tracking system for monthly expenditures and prepare payroll documents as directed. Additionally, they will track department enrollment numbers, annually updating enrollment data history for all courses in Political Science and International Security and Conflict Resolution. They will maintain department files for past semester syllabi in hard copy and online database in department Sharepoint site. The ASA will be responsible for training new work-study students,

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program or its equivalent and some experience in an office environment.

  • Experience with data entry and updating database records
  • Experience working with budgets.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $2912 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $2912 - $4592 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
