Under the direct supervision of the Associate Vice President for Campus and Community Affairs, the Black Resource Center Director provides leadership and long-range planning for the Black Resource Center (BRC). The Director of the Black Resource Center leads innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving Black student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall Black student experience. The Director provides creative leadership, strategic planning, and vision regarding the role the Black Resource Center plays in support of the academic and public service mission of San Diego State University. The Director of the Black Resource Center collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, the Division of Diversity and Innovation, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center. This position will represent SDSU to external community and governmental organizations. This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to African and African American students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. This position will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University employees to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote the Black Resource Center and raise awareness of Black excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials, and through representation on campus-wide committees.
The Black Resource Center Director envisions, manages, and directs the BRC including the implementation of the mission, vision, strategic plan, goals, and objectives. The BRC Director provides supervision to the staff in the BRC, including the Assistant Director, Faculty Scholar, Coordinator, and student staff. The Director oversees the hiring, onboarding, and supervision of BRC student staff (graduate and undergraduate students) and is responsible for providing BRC fiduciary oversight in accordance with SDSU and CSU policy. The Director also develops, implements, and evaluates assessment tools for BRC programs and learning outcomes. This position also requires working with appropriate campus entities to periodically review and analyze the campus climate for diverse students, faculty, and staff and report findings and recommendations to appropriate administrators and committees. The Director supports and contributes to campus diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in cooperation with Divisional goals and structures and addresses the needs of a diverse student body. The BRC Director participates in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented student populations at San Diego State University. The Director identifies and makes recommendations on communication opportunities, challenges, emerging issues, policy issues, and public relations, and works collaboratively and strategically with organizational leadership and campus partners to develop creative solutions to complex and sensitive situations. More importantly, the director situates the Black Resource Center as a space where students of the African diaspora can engage in meaningful relationships with Black faculty and staff through the following high-impact practices: Faculty research opportunities, Study abroad, Internships, and Mentoring programs.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Africana Studies, Ethnic Students, Cultural Studies, Women' Studies, or a related field
- Five years of progressively responsible professional experience providing student services
- Five years of experience promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education or a similarly complex organization
- Experience managing staff and/or student teams
Compensation and Benefits
- A terminal degree in Africana Studies, Ethnic Students or Cultural Studies, Women' Studies, Higher Education Administration, or a related field
- Five years prior experience in higher education
- Knowledge and experience working with diverse Black populations, including undocumented students and students from varied national origins
- Experience working from anti-racist, queer, and feminist frameworks
- Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff
- Track record operating with an anti-oppression framework and an anti-deficit lens
- Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work.
