The Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Land Use Services Department (LUS) are recruiting for Supervising Engineers to supervise a section of staff engaged in the major activities of public works and civil engineering projects and perform difficult and specialized engineering work. Positions oversee engineering projects related to flood control facilities, solid waste management, highway, traffic, planning and land development projects, building and safety, code enforcement, fire hazard abatement, or mining. Responsibilities include civil engineering design; coordinating, developing and constructing projects and other improvement plans; assigning and evaluating work; overseeing studies, plans and specifications; assisting in budget preparation; recommending expenditures; and representing the department at various meetings.

Background: Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

Travel: Travel to various sites throughout the County is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Physical: This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity; occasionally use protective equipment or clothing.

Minimum Requirements

License: Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.


Meet one of the following options listed below:

Option 1 :

Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
Experience: Four (4) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.


Option 2 :

Education: Forty-five semester (68 quarter) units in civil engineering or a closely related field. Candidates must provide a list of completed coursework. **See note below for more information.
Experience: Six (6) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.

**Note: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education Degree Equivalency Evaluation: Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited school in Civil Engineering is highly desirable.
