In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

Effective July 2, 2021 - 3.04% increase

Effective July 1, 2022 - 3.5% increase

Mandatory Employee Retirement Contributions will decrease on the following dates:

Effective July 2, 2021 - 0.46% decrease

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an Open Eligible List to fill current vacancies within Orange County Sheriff's Department (Research and Development Division). The eligible list established from this recruitment may also be used by other departments within the County of Orange as vacancies occur.

Orange County Sheriff's Department is looking for journey-level Metalsmiths and Welders who possess experience fabricating, assembling, installing and repairing sheet metal products and equipment, including control boxes, drainpipes and furnace casings. The work may involve any of the following: setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend and straighten sheet metal; shaping metal over anvils, blocks or forms using hammer; operating soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts; or inspecting, assembling and smoothing seams and joints of blurred surfaces.

Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.

Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts).

The ideal candidate will possess considerable training and experience in the areas listed below.

Experience and knowledge of:
  • The methods, materials and equipment used in the Metalsmith/Welding trade.
  • Journey-level ability to fabricate, repair and install materials and equipment consisting of ferrous and nonferrous metals, including medium and high carbon steel, copper aluminum, stainless steel and cast iron.
  • Perform various welding operations which meet the specifications and standards of applicable building and/or safety codes.
  • Set up and operate electric FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and plasma cutting machines as well as oxy/fuel welding equipment to cut, braze weld and silver solder joints on piping and tubing, weld castings for pumps, and operate sheet metal shears and brake to form metal.
Proven ability to:
  • Lay out work from plans, schematic, rough sketches, blueprints, drawings and oral instructions.
  • Suggest modifications and make working sketches to indicate changes.
  • Employ applicable trade methods of shop mathematics.

Environmental Conditions: Metalsmiths are exposed to sharp edges of metal, arc flashes and welding fumes and asbestos. Must have normal or correctable eyesight sufficient to accomplish precision work; must be able to differentiate color coded welding rods. Incumbent will have contact with the public and work in confined spaces. Metalsmiths may be exposed to the outdoors, varying weather conditions and wildlife. As needed, incumbents are required to work inside a jail or correctional facility and may have contact with inmates.
