Hours for this position are flexible and will be established with the selected incumbent.

General Description: This is a professional position. The incumbent is responsible for providing nursing care and other related duties for individuals receiving medical services at the CSB.

Organization: Incumbent reports to the Psychiatric Nurse Supervisor and supervises no staff.

Essential Functions:
  • Conducts nursing assessments to include triage of medical complaints, evidenced-based screenings and measurement of health markers, which may include height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and vision;
  • Obtains medical history including possible allergies, chronic health problems, psychiatric problems, substance abuse and other pertinent information;
  • Consults with family, medical and interagency personnel regarding physical and emotional problems;
  • Makes appointments and may accompany patient to various health clinics and hospital emergency rooms;
  • May obtain blood samples for various health tests;
  • Maintains health records according to set standards;
  • Gives medication and provides treatment as prescribed by attending physician;
  • Monitors medication levels and side effects of medication that is prescribed by physician;
  • Administers first aid for illnesses and injuries;
  • Provides instruction on general health and hygiene;
  • Provides consultation and education services as needed regarding health issues, medications, etc;
  • Requisitions and administers medical supplies and drugs;
  • Conducts collateral contacts with families of clients or other community care givers involved with the client;
  • Expands own knowledge by such means as academic study, independent reading and attending outside conferences, workshops and seminars;
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of general nursing and nursing methods; knowledge of health promotion and education and ability to provide health education to individuals served. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to act independently and make crisis intervention decisions in emergency situations when professional medical guidance isn't readily available. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, families, and medical and clinical staff.

Education, Experience and Training: Diploma from an approved nursing program, OR an Associate's degree in nursing; Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. At least two years of experience working as a Registered Nurse. Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Experience working with individual with co-occurring medical and behavioral health and I/DD diagnoses is preferred.
