Job Description




To perform advanced level land survey work using a variety of instrumentation, and to assist and fill in for the Survey Party Chief.

Under general supervision from a Survey Party Chief or higher classification, the incumbent will work on land survey field crews; set up, operate and adjust conventional and robotic total stations, as well as conventional and digital levels and GPS receivers, also set up and operate survey field data collection equipment in the field and for office processing; incumbent will be familiar with the proper survey methods used to establish control, create alignment, control line, perform property surveys, and collect topography locations; incumbents will be proficient with calculations of angles for curves, control lines, traverses, closures, GPS Localizations, and property surveys; able to establish precise grades and collect profile, cross sections, contour grids and line grades; able to calculate lines, curves, elevations, grades, and stationing using agency record maps, city and county improvement plans, construction plans and field books; familiar with the use of underground utility metal locators; able to use Computer Aided Design and other software related to land surveying such as Bently, Microstation, and OpenRoads Design; may set up blowers and other safety equipment; will collect sewer manholes and structure details including invert elevation, size, material and center line of pipe; can assume duties of leadership of the crew during periods of absence of the Survey Party Chief; may conduct safety meetings; will analyze data from other field crews and provides technical support and training for other field crew members; maintains standards for uniform survey practices; can coordinate survey projects for efficiency; must operate instruments used in survey work with full technical expertise; should be able to use and instruct others in the use and care of conventional and digital/electronic, survey equipment and perform related duties as required.


Applicants must possess a valid California Class C driver license - AND - Two years of experience with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County performing duties of a Survey Party Worker II -OR- Three years experience operating a variety of digital survey equipment.

Desirable Qualifications: Possession of a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors or equivalent.


The competitive selection process may cover the knowledge of : Algebra, geometry, trigonometry; principles, methods, and techniques of surveying and drafting; the ability to : Operate surveying equipment, make complex mathematical calculations involving geodetics; prepare drawings from field survey notes; prepare, review and maintain field survey notes; lift heavy objects; train survey crew members; coordinate survey projects to eliminate duplication.
