Payroll Technician I


Processes a full range of payroll/personnel transactions including but not limited to; appointments, status changes, leaves, and separations for all categories of CSU employee's using the Payroll Information Management System (PIMS), Payroll Procedures Manual (PPM), and State Controller's Technical Letters ensuring accurate pay and employment records. Calculate pay based on employee's status and time reporting records; process levies, garnishments, and wage withholding orders; accurately apply retirement plans; audit and reconcile employment and payroll data; adjust leave accruals; and maintain office files. Organize work effectively to meet strict deadlines and accurately perform various mathematical calculations. Independently process and complete payments such as: intermittent, overtime, shift differential, stipends, and excess plus; special consultant, student assistant, pay increases, leave status, and accruals in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Ability to identify and correct errors to ensure proper pay and reconcile variances to maintain data systems integrity. Initiate and analyze reports and process attendance using Absence Management and Time & Labor modules via PeopleSoft. Assist in development of campus payroll processes. Additional duties as assigned.


Minimum two years payroll experience in preparing and processing payroll/personnel documents with knowledge of general payroll methods, practices, and procedures. Ability to acquire, independently select, and apply applicable state and federal laws, education codes, and collective bargaining agreements to process pay. Ability to tactfully and clearly write and orally communicate established procedures and policies to individuals who have minimal knowledge of pay related processes and procedures; maintain courtesy and good judgment in responding to others; ability to trace and resolve payroll discrepancies; ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships with campus staff, faculty, administrators, and students; ability to accurately apply rules and regulations to maintain accurate leave accruals, health benefits, and retirement plans. The incumbent must be able to use effective problem solving and interpersonal skills; effectively interact with all university employees and general public; handle multiple tasks simultaneously; set priorities to meet strict deadlines; operate a ten key calculator and computer terminals for on-line keying of various transactions. Proficient with Microsoft Office. CSU experience preferred.

Hiring Range: $2,912 - $4,500 per month
