The School of Art at California State University Long Beach is seeking candidates for a tenure track position in Fiber, 3D Media. The successful candidate will serve as area head to implement the future vision of the program in Fiber Arts. This position will work closely with Wood and Metal program faculty to support BFA and MFA students within the 3D Media degree as well as a broad range of students outside of the degree. The Fiber Arts facility currently includes labs to support weaving, dying, printing, paper and bookmaking. These labs are in close proximity to all School of Art facilities to promote interdisciplinarity within a fine arts curriculum that serves a highly diverse student population. Long Beach is a diverse beach community and a dynamic port city in the greater Los Angeles metro area which is home to world class galleries, museums and other cultural institutions. Required Qualifications:
- M.F.A. or record of extraordinary creative/professional achievement in fiber arts or relevant discipline/field. Degree at time of application or official notification of the completion of the degree by August 1, 2022. Strong creative/professional record as demonstrated by portfolio of work and C.V.
- Evidence of leadership skills necessary to oversee a discipline-specific program/area in fiber arts within the School of Art
- Potential for serving the learning needs of discipline-specific BFA and MFA Fiber students, as well as non-discipline-specific BA studio Art students
- Ability to collaborate with faculty and students across multiple discipline-specific program areas
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering the creative and learning goals of students
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the college level
- Evidence of global awareness of diverse traditions, histories, discourses and contemporary practice in fiber arts and the broader field of contemporary art, and ability to incorporate this awareness into instruction
- Familiarity with emergent technologies, alternative and experimental methods, and sustainable approaches within fiber arts
- Evidence of ongoing research, scholarly, and creative activity
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population
- Prior instructional or instructional-assisting experience at the college level
- Evidence of success or potential for success in teaching in one or more of the following: pattern design and printing, textile dyeing, fiber and mixed media sculptural forms, weaving, dyeing, woven structures, artist books, garment design
- Evidence of success or potential for success in teaching in other studio programs/areas within the School of Art or teaching collaboratively with faculty in disciplines elsewhere within the university
- Evidence of of success or potential for success in teaching innovative college-level courses that are both relevant and engaging to a diverse student body
- Demonstrated ability to articulate and implement a dynamic vision for the future of a program/area in fiber arts
- Evidence of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
- Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Fiber Arts program and in other areas within the School of Art [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
- Mentor and advise students at a broad range of levels from non-majors to MFA candidates
- Serve on MFA graduate committees
- Serve as program/area head for fiber arts on a rotating basis
- Participate in curriculum and program development and keep content current
- Engage in outreach, student mentoring, involvement in student activities and portfolio reviews
- Assist in recruit, review, and supervise part-time faculty, technical staff and student assistants
- Develop and maintain ongoing research, scholarly and creative activities
- Act as program liaison with professionals in the field
- Participate in service to the School of Art, college, university, community, and scholarly/creative/professional field
