Full-Time (37.5 hours per week)/Fixed-Term Position

$61,425 - $72,238 per year

($31.50 - $34.73 per hour)

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking to fill three (3) full-time Wildfire Defensible Space Inspector positions. Under supervision, Wildfire Defensible Space Inspectors perform a wide variety of fire prevention duties focused on individual property evaluations and one-on-one education. This is a great opportunity to gain hands on experience working for one of the finest fire departments in the State.

Fixed-Term appointments may be made for up to a three-year period with the potential to extend. Continued appointment in this position is contingent upon funding and job performance. This is an "at will" position and has limited benefits available. This position is fully funded through the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MPWA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to) :
  • Perform defensible space inspections across the City and Marinwood CSD in accordance with San Rafael Municipal Code 4.12.
  • Provides guidance to residents on suggested and required home hardening strategies.
  • Investigates public and referred public agency complaints.
  • Understand and refers residents to appropriate available support resources.
  • Increases awareness, knowledge and actions implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires, such as defensible space and other fuels, reduction activities, fire prevention and fire safe building standards.
  • Reviews, evaluates, processes, and maintains a variety of files related to fire prevention activities.
  • Attends on occasion a variety of continuing education classes, seminars, and/or meetings; remain current on applicable codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices and techniques of fire prevention.
  • Fire prevention codes and regulations.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
  • Understanding and the ability to utilize the City Municipal Code.
  • Principles and techniques of fire inspection work is desirable.
  • English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, letter and report writing.
  • City's computer hardware and software program.
  • Window's, Microsoft Office, Apple products such as iPhones and iPads, City Trakit Software, Emergency Reporting Systems, ArcGIS Collector App.

Ability To :
  • Work effectively in small teams or independently for extended periods of time.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Practice sound judgment.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Engage effectively with the public and work harmoniously with the San Rafael Fire Department Team.
  • Independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections.
  • Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques.
  • Be self-motivated, work independently to complete assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Interpret and explain fire prevention services, policies and procedures.
  • Stay abreast of fire prevention services, policies, and procedures.
  • Work effectively with the public and representatives of other City Departments and agencies.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with stake holders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.

Minimum Qualifications Desired - Please do not apply if you do not meet the requirements below:
  • In accordance with State legal requirements, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the application filing deadline.
  • Completion of twelfth (12th) grade and any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.
  • MUST possess and maintain a Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Possession of one or more of the following is desirable:
  1. A background in customer service or public service
  2. Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist
  3. Completion of S-190 and S-260 courses.
  4. Completion of CA State Fire Marshal 1A, 1B, 1C, 2B, & 2C Courses
  5. ICC Certification Fire 77, CA, CF, & CP

Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination :
  • MUST be fully vaccinated (two weeks have passed since your second dose of a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or single dose of Johnson and Johnson) prior to starting as an employee with the City of San Rafael.
  • You will be asked to provide documentation from the immunization source showing the date(s) the vaccine was administered.

Disaster Service Workers :

All City of San Rafael employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment at the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

The City of San Rafael offers an attractive compensation and benefits program. The salary for this position is $51,425 - $72,238 Annually (DOE) and a competitive benefits program including:
  • Retirement:Participation in PARS (Public Agency Retirement System). Employer contribution of 3.75% and employee contribution of 3.75% of their salary to the retirement plan.
  • Health Insurance:Receives $600 towards the cost of health insurance premiums.
  • Sick Leave:Twelve (12) days of paid sick leave per year. Pro-rated based on hire date.
  • Vacation: Ten (10) days per year. Pro-rated based on hire date.
  • Other Leave: Eleven (11) City holidays and two (2) floating holidays.
