Description POTTERY KILN TECHNICIAN
(Recreation Technician) 10-18 HOURS/WEEK Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
The City of Sunnyvale is seeking 2 self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a pottery kiln technician. Under general supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator, a kiln technician is responsible for firing participants' works (cone 06 and cone 10+), mixing glazes and general oversight of the pottery studio. Technician schedules are semi-flexible.
Essential Job Functions
May include, but are not limited to the following:
- Load and off-load participant works.
- Fire 4 industrial sized kilns (2 electric and 2 gas) according to schedule.
- Order supplies and mix glazes for the studio.
- Oversee the maintenance and repairs for studio equipment.
- Oversee open studio hours assisting students with technical questions.
- Maintain a safe, friendly and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Report to work in a timely manner and appropriately prepared.
- Drying slip for disposal.
Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience
The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:
- Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND
- A minimum of 2 years of experience with loading and off-loading kilns; AND
- A minimum of 1 year maintaining pottery equipment or equivalent maintenance experience; AND
- A minimum of 2 years of glazing and firing experience
Pottery and ceramic techniques including centering, wheel throwing, slab rolling, wedging, glazing, hand-building and low- and high-firing is required.Desirable Qualifications:
- A degree in pottery/ceramics.
- Practicing potter/ceramicist.
- 1 year experience teaching pottery/ceramic classes by leading and demonstrating techniques associated with the subject matter.
- Ability to develop class curriculum for beginners.
- Knowledge of alternative firing techniques.
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record, or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
