Properly and safely uses provided hand and power tools that includes cleaning, securing and ensuring required safeguards are in place. Performs minor and major repairs to heavy duty diesel and gasoline engines, heavy duty automatic transmissions and heavy-duty electrical components. Performs preventative maintenance such as changing oil and filters, lubricating, flushing cooling systems, replacing and adjusting brakes, replacing belts, etc. Ability to drive county vehicles required to perform this required task. Receives and processes work orders, ensuring prompt response to both routine and emergency maintenance and repair requests; assists in scheduling tasks according to priority. Constructs and assembles fire service grass units and service trucks using provided plans and drawings. Rebuilds and reconditions fire equipment as needed; Fire pumps, valves, hydraulic cylinders, PPV fans, chainsaws, generators, nozzles, fire hose, deluge guns, ladders, etc. Communicates extensively with OEMs to diagnose and repair specialized fire equipment components. Performs electrical wiring both AC and DC, currents for generators, breaker panels, outlet boxes, flood lights, warning lights and sirens, etc. Services, maintains and/or repairs fire service breathing air systems as required by Occupational Safety Health Association (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Performs related work as assigned. About you Education and Experience: High School Graduation or GED equivalent. Automotive Mechanic Associates degree is preferred. Three (3) years of fire apparatus and equipment experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certifications and Licenses: Must possess a valid state Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B driver's license with appropriate endorsements. A Class A is desired. Must possess and First Aid / CPR Certification and re-certify prior to expiration. Must possess Forklift Operators certification or the ability to obtain. A welding certification is desirable. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION Performs skilled level electrical work involving installation, inspection, maintenance, alteration and repairs of electronic traffic control signals and devices, pole-mounted outdoor lighting, associated mechanical equipment and solid-state traffic control devices in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade. Maintains an on-call status to ensure the safe operation of the traffic signals, traffic control devices, and City lighting systems; performs other duties as required within the scope of the classification. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of a Crew Leader or Maintenance Supervisor. Work is reviewed for results obtained and for conformance with technical standards. May receive cross-functional guidance from Signal Tech II. SUPERVISION EXERCISED May provide instruction and advice to other employees on an assignment basis. May supervise temporary employees, community service workers, and DOC Inmate workers as directed, or as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor. Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by technical/trade school coursework or apprenticeship in electrical trades work. Completion of a recognized four year electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent training, or three years of experience as a skilled electrician/Traffic Signal Technician. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Inspects a wide variety of defective electronic equipment to determine malfunctions to perform repair work. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematic diagrams, logic charts, and manufacturer's manuals to isolate malfunctioning components. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on traffic signals and street lighting through visual inspections, hardware and software equipment replacement, group re-lamping, and equipment testing. Performs routine maintenance, painting of backplates, visors, signal heads, signal poles, light poles and mast arms. Documents information on preventive maintenance file on electrical equipment and machinery and monitors a preventative maintenance program. Responds to emergency call outs. Operate and work from an aerial bucket truck, or crane truck for repairs or for removal and placement of poles and equipment. Replenishes electrical parts and supplies and maintains an inventory. Performs construction, maintenance and/ or mechanical work as needed or assigned on industrial and automotive equipment. Cleans and maintains tools, equipment and work space. Supervises and leads DOC Inmate Labor as trained and assigned. Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts. Provides excellent customer service to all contacts. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity. May be required to work early mornings, evenings, nights, holidays or weekends as needed. Come be part of our community with the City of Orlando Starting Salary: Heavy Equipment Technician I: $19.70 - 30.52 per hour, depending on qualifications. Heavy Equipment Technician II: $21.12 - 32.74 per hour, depending on qualifications. PLUS $.30 per hour for each ASE certificate (up to six). PLUS $.30 per hour tool allowance. PLUS $.90 per hour when working the second shift (2 pm to 10:30 pm). Nature of Work: Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems; inspecting, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, and performing preventative maintenance on City automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles and small engines. This position assigns, oversees work and trains lower lever mechanics as needed. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness. SECOND SHIFT: 2PM - 10:30PM Minimum Requirements Heavy Equipment Technician I : High School diploma or equivalent required and two years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic required ; or accreditation from a vocational institute r equired . Must possess two (2) ASE T-series certifications, or one (1) ASE T-series certification and one (1) EVT certification in related field. Must obtain ASE T-series certifications within 6 months of employment. May be required to obtain valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department. Valid Florida driver license required . Heavy Equipment Technician II : High School diploma or equivalent required and four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic required . Must possess least two (2) ASE T-series certifications and two (2) EVT certifications in a related field, or any combination of four (4) ASE T-series and/or EVT certifications in a related field. May be required to obtain valid Florida Class B CDL with Air Brakes at the discretion of the department. Valid Florida driver license r equired.
