Position Summary (Classified as: Performing Arts Technician II) Part-time (3/4 time-base; 0.75 FTE; 30 hours/week) position available on or after August 12, 2024 in the Theatre Department. This appointment is on the 10/12 pay plan position and works 10 months, paid over 12 months, with June 15 - August 15 off each year. The Costumer works independently with limited creative or technical direction and plays a pivotal role as a creative and technically adept member of the production team. Job Duties Duties include but are not limited to: Utilize ingenuity, technical skills, and knowledge of production goals and themes to create and construct costumes according to design specifications. Tasks may include preparing and/or drafting new patterns, selecting and preparing materials, reconstructing existing costumes, creating new costumes from scratch, fabricating costume accessories and wigs, fitting costumes and making alterations, styling hair, applying makeup, repairing and restoring costumes, ordering supplies, and ensuring proper cleaning, maintenance, and storage of costumes. Independently handle more complex projects within the production specialty, including planning, organizing, and implementing for one or more productions. Manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously, demonstrating considerable judgment and discretion in material use and adherence to safety requirements. Work with minimal creative and technical direction, determining approaches to projects and priorities independently. Provide lead work direction to other staff members, ensuring coordination and effective collaboration within the production team. Maintain ongoing coordination with faculty involved in productions, offering direct lab support to students engaged in production activities. Responsible for overseeing the costume shop, costume storage areas, and dressing rooms, including maintaining and caring for all equipment, coordinating necessary equipment repairs, and managing consumable stock and supplies. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Entry to the first level within this classification requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Theater or related field. Three years of experience in a similar role within the performing arts or related industry. Demonstrated expertise in costume construction. Proficiency in using relevant equipment related to costume design, production, and maintenance (e.g. sewing machines, fabric cutters, mannequins). Experience providing lead work direction or mentoring to junior staff members or students in a production setting. Familiarity with budgeting and cost estimation processes for production-related materials and supplies. Experience in collaborating with diverse teams to achieve production goals. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty. More sophisticated knowledge of design theory and principles to be able to translate design specifications or drawings into costumes and accessories Ability to independently manage production support projects and productions by breaking segments into working units that coincide with production needs. Ability to work on more complex projects/designs and to work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs. Ability to use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty. Ability to plan the layout and use of work areas. Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty. Position Summary Under the general supervision of the School Director, the Equipment Technician will perform preventive maintenance, repair, assembly or fabrication, and installation of the School’s equipment in specialized facilities that support creative practice in ceramics, furniture design and woodworking, jewelry and metalwork, book arts and printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, interior architecture, and multimedia. Position Summary Under the general supervision of the School Director, the Equipment Technician will perform preventive maintenance, repair, assembly or fabrication, and installation of the School’s equipment in specialized facilities that support creative practice in ceramics, furniture design and woodworking, jewelry and metalwork, book arts and printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, interior architecture, and multimedia.
