Position Description Come and join the City of Fresno in achieving our mission of Building a Better Fresno! Under close supervision, Bus Mechanic I maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline and/or alternative fuel powered City buses and related equipment. Incumbents perform engine tune-ups and adjustments using standard testing and diagnostic equipment, respond to road calls to repair buses and related equipment and perform minor repairs on buses and related equipment. College level or vocational school coursework may not substitute for the required work experience. After one year of current, paid work experience with the City of Santa Monica, a Transit Mechanic I may be promoted to a Transit Mechanic II upon meeting the minimum qualifications of the Transit Mechanic II and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. Licenses and Certificates: Level I: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license. Must obtain a California Class B commercial driver license or permit with appropriate medical certification prior to the first day of hire. Must obtain a valid Class B driver license with passenger and airbrake endorsements within six months from date of hire. General The Utility Worker position starts a fostering career in the Maintenance Department. A motivated Utility Worker has the chance to become a journeyed mechanic with the district. With appropriate experience and knowledge this journey starts at the entry level Mechanic C, then can progress to the intermediate Mechanic B position, and finally can arrive at the journey level Mechanic A. The Utility Worker reports to the Utility Maintenance Supervisor and is responsible for safely cleaning, maintaining, and servicing all transit vehicles and maintenance facilities for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans). Work schedule may consist different shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays at either of two District operated facilities (North Base - South San Francisco and South Base - San Carlos). Essential Functions & Duties Perform cleaning and washing of exterior, undercarriage, and interior buses. Safely drive and park buses and other district vehicles on and off operating bases. Inspect district vehicles during servicing and report defects and damages to Mechanic or Supervisor. Assist mechanics with minor repairs and adjustments for heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
