About Our Job

Human Rights and Community Partnerships is looking to hire a Marketing and Communications Internship. This is a position that will assist with providing entry level to mid-level communication support to the Office of Nonprofit Engagement (D-ONE) located in the Denver Human Rights and Community Partnerships Agency (HRCP). The position performs daily work that requires professional communication through many types of media and coordinates information flow to the public on a broad range of department programs, activities, and services.

The position will be required to write and edit communication plans and coordinate the creation of a wide variety of documents, media, and programs to inform and educate internal clients and Denver residents, including: the promotion of the agency and increasing positive media exposure.

The selected Intern will assist and sometimes lead with the creation of marketing campaigns, print & electronic newsletters, news releases, reports, articles, brochures, and fliers; uses the website and other social media to engage residents; and coordinates the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan for the agency. The selected Intern will engage in work that involves broad contact with the public, other city officials, and city staff. The selected intern will preferably be available for 10-15/hours a week, for 3-6 months total. This is a hybrid environment experience with expectation of onsite in office 2-3 times a week, however, some time may be spent working remote from home.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to experience:
  • Writing, editing, and coordinates electronic distribution and limited printing of a variety of newsletters, reports, brochures, fliers, etc.; prepares or acquires graphic materials as needed
  • Creating and distributing press releases and news articles
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of communications, branding, and marketing plan for agency in coordination with D-ONE’s contracted PR firm, and other agency communications professionals
  • Working with vendors and agency departments to prepare ads and publications and creates marketing material distribution strategies
  • Assisting with the timely maintenance of the agency website and social media platforms; tracks key analytics to inform and create strategy; coordinates staff hosting of FB Live events
  • Attending a wide variety of department meetings such as staff meetings, commission meetings, and special events to help communicate and promote them.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of marketing plans for various events and agency activities
  • Utilizing agency contact management program to email updates and other items of interest to residents
  • Participating in crisis management planning and assists with the development of a crisis communications plan

This is and unpaid internship.

About You

Our ideal candidate will have/be:
  • Ability to multitask and produce high-quality work by projected deadlines
  • Must have interest in government communications and marketing
  • Must have a passion for marketing and communications--and a sense of humor is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of the marketing and communication principles and practices
  • Basic knowledge of desktop publishing software preferred.
  • Willingness to improve skills in public contact and customer service
  • Firm ability to write, edit and communicate clearly and create a positive and professional image of the agency and the city
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions in conformance with city and agency policies as they relate to the release of public information
  • Ability to communicate effectively in conversations, public presentations, and written form
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials, department heads, employees, residents, and all media
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion)
  • Continued enrollment in a college program is condition of employment with the City
  • Experience Requirement: None
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted

  • Copy of most recent College transcripts (official or unofficial)
