The Department of Public Works is currently recruiting for Equipment Operators I and I Trainees who, under general supervision, operate light construction equipment for repair, maintenance and construction on county roads, landfills, airports, or similar settings for the Department of Transportation/Flood Control.
Immediate vacancies in San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga, Joshua Tree and Fontana.
The Eligible List may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the County. Candidates willing to work in the High/Low Desert Yards are especially encouraged to apply. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Equipment Operator I/I Trainee
Pre-Employment Process: Applicants must pass a background check, including fingerprinting, prior to appointment.
License: Equipment Operator I: Must maintain a valid commercial Class A or commercial Class B driver license with endorsements for air brakes, tank, and manual transmissions. Some positions may require a valid California Class A driver license with appropriate endorsements. Equipment Operator I Trainee: Must have a valid Class C Driver License at time of application and a class A or B learners permit at time of hire. Must be able to obtain a valid Class A or B Driver License with endorsements for air brakes, tank and manual transmissions within 120 days of hire or be terminated. Some positions may require a valid California Class A Driver License with appropriate endorsements.
Equipment Operator I/I Trainee: The DOT mandates drug testing of all employees in jobs requiring a Class B or higher driver license. Prior to hire, employees must pass a medical examination and drug test. Employees are subject to random drug testing as well as drug testing following accidents promotions, and upon reasonable suspicion. The California DOT requires that all applicants submit a work history for the past ten (10) years; a recent DMV printout will be required at the selection interview.
Availability: Equipment Operator I/I Trainee: During Critical Response Situations, employees must be able to respond to their assigned yards within 60 minutes if assigned to valley and desert yards OR within 45 minutes if assigned to mountain yards. A telephone or other method of immediate communication or contact is required. Employees are subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks.
Physical: Equipment Operator I/I Trainee: Incumbents climb into and out of equipment, bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough and uneven terrain, in extreme climates, and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbents must be able to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, kneel, twist, turn, and stoop. Incumbents work outside continuously on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces and are exposed to electricity, chemicals, fire, heat, oil, odors, dust, gas, and noise.
Promotion: Equipment Operator I Trainees must qualify for promotion to Equipment Operator I within nine (9) months or be terminated.
Equipment Operator I/I Trainee
Equipment Operator I Trainee: Possession of a valid Class C Driver License.
Equipment Operator I: Possession of a valid commercial Class A or commercial Class B driver license with endorsements for air brakes, tank, and manual transmissions.
Must meet one of the following options:
Equipment Operator I Trainee:
Option 1: Six (6) months of experience as a Maintenance & Construction Worker I OR higher for San Bernardino County.
Option 2: Six (6) months of experience in the maintenance/construction of roadways and/or flood control facilities, airports, landfills, or similar public works setting OR in the operation of light construction equipment.
Equipment Operator I
Option 1: Nine (9) months of experience working as an Equipment Operator I Trainee for San Bernardino County.
Option 2: One (1) year of experience in the maintenance/construction of roadways and/or flood control facilities, airports, landfills, or similar public works settings. Experience must include operating light to medium equipment. ( Building construction experience is not considered qualifying for this level .)
