Department Summary

The Orientation and Transition Programs (OTP) Office is within the Enrollment Management unit within Academic Affairs at CSUSB. The OTP office consist of the following program areas: Orientation, First-Year Experience, Transfer Student Success, and Campus Tours and Visit Center and is responsible for developing and implementing welcome and transition programming for newly admitted first-year and transfer students, as well as their family members.

Orientation and Transition Programs offers purposeful and dynamic programming that meet the needs of our diverse student population through partnerships and collaboration across campus divisions. Transition programs are designed for first-year and transfer students in order to equip them with the information needed to better manage their transitions to the university and help set them up for student success here at CSUSB. These transition programs prepare students for academic success, provide knowledge of university resources, encourage involvement in student activities, and help build meaningful relationships. Each orientation and transition program are constructed to minimize anxiety and to promote positive attitudes about student success on campus.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Orientation and Transition Programs, the Transfer Student Success Coordinator will be responsible for recruitment and support of students transferring to university from Community Colleges. The incumbent will develop and execute transition workshops and presentations, coordinate events and programs that support transfer students, and provide one on one assistance (in person, on the phone and via email). The Transfer Student Success Coordinator will develop marketing pieces geared to transferring students and develop and maintain relationships with community college counselors. The incumbent will serve as CSUSB's representative to Community College advisory meetings, CSU system-wide meetings and conferences and other prospective student events.

This position will collaborate and support CSUSB transition efforts on and off campus for transferring students. These events could include, but are not limited to, topics around application workshops, financial aid and academic advising support. The incumbent will also coordinate with Campus Tours and Visitor Services to provide specialized tours for Community College partner groups. The incumbent will work with individual community colleges to determine need for programs and provide opportunities to support student next steps and transition to CSUSB. They will also be responsible for the hiring, training, providing lead and support of a team of transfer peer mentors who can provide peer to peer student support.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Development:
  • Develop and implement university transition and support programs for newly admitted and continuing transfer students aimed specifically to support the successful transition of transfer students into and through CSUSB.
  • Coordinate all aspects of program development including planning, marketing, budget, execution, staffing, risk assessment and program assessment and evaluation.
  • Work with academic colleges and services, academic advising centers, peer mentoring and student affairs departments to intentionally connect transfer student programs to department, division, and university strategic plans and learning outcomes.

Transfer Student Experience Development and Collaboration:
  • Builds and strengthens relationships with the university to provide a comprehensive transfer student experience for newly admitted and continuing transfer students aligned with the university strategic plan and department vision, mission, and goals.
  • Collaborate with key campus partners (Orientation, First Year Experience, Mentoring program, CAPS, ASI, Student Engagement, etc.) to develop initiatives that affect the success, retention, and graduation of our transfer students.
  • Collaborate with Admissions and Outreach to participate in on-campus and virtual recruitment events / programs specifically targeted for transfer students.
  • Partner with the academic colleges and to meet the need of transferring students. This can include Next Step and Transition support programs, recruitment programs and should include CSUSB services and departments that support the transition of students to the campus. The incumbent will coordinate with community colleges seeking academic tours to provide services as requested.

Student Development and Lead Work Direction:
  • Responsible for the Development and execution of a transfer student peer mentoring program.
  • Support the lead work direction and input to evaluation of the Transfer Peer Mentors job duties and responsibilities.
  • Develop and inform a comprehensive training for the Transfer Peer Mentors, and other student assistants. Responsible for class preparation, class facilitation, and input to student evaluations.
  • Assist with the training and lead work direction of a graduate assistant if applicable.

Program Marketing:
  • Create marketing materials for transfer student events / program / workshops and maintain updated and accurate information on the transfer student website.
  • Develop and maintain social media accounts.

Assessment and Resource Allocation:
  • In collaboration with the Director, develop and implement a needs assessment process to assess transfer student learning outcomes and impact of transfer student programs.
  • Create a management plan, data collection and analysis to ensure the continual improvement of transfer student innovative, data-informed strategies and compile annual reports.
  • Manage budget process and based on assessments allocate program resources appropriately. Submit annual budget request for the successful execution of transfer student programming needs. Maintain up-to-date files, written reports and job-related data.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Institution Research, track student transition programming attendance data, retention statistics, write reports regarding program success and impact for submission to director.

Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Maintain professional standards of practice through participation and involvement in continuing education activities as well as general understanding of CSUSB's colleges and majors.
  • Provide thoughtful and dedicated support for other CSUSB transition programming and/or campus-wide events and initiatives as directed.
  • Serve as department and divisional representative; attend and/or chair departmental, divisional and university committees.

Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

  • Knowledge of contract development, negotiations and execution.
  • Event planning skills including designing, marketing, implementing, and assessing impact.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Experience providing lead and evaluating student staff.
  • Ability to design and present student staff training and development.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree highly preferred from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant post-bachelors experience with orientation / transition program development, and providing lead or advising student staff.
  • An understanding of student development and transition theory.
  • Three years post-master's university orientation experience preferred.
  • Experience with outcomes assessment and analysis is preferred.
  • Experience working independently and self-driven.

Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of a competence and indicate the potential for further growth. (A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.)


Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,304 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month
