The city of Kansas City is seeking qualified candidates for two (2) key positions: City Architect (Division Head), and Section Architect (Section Head).  


Kansas City (KC) is a growing, world class community of nearly 500,000 residents that serves as the central hub for a thriving bi-state, 18-county metropolitan area of 2.5 million residents. The City is governed by a 13-member City Council and Mayor that appoint a City Manager to oversee a municipal organization with over 4,700 employees, 16 departments, and a total annual operating and capital budget exceeding $1 billion. Job Description


Reporting to the Director of General Services, the Architect Division Head leads the planning, design and construction management responsibilities for the City’s Architectural Review Division. Responsibilities include collaborating and working with other City departments and other public/private partnerships to assist in the assessment, preparation, and implementation of all City owned buildings being constructed or undergoing renovation, tenant improvements, and in the development of open spaces. The City Architect oversees a staff of seven (7) employees, supported by an annual operating budget of just under $400,000, and an approved facility improvement projects. annual projects budget currently over $300,000, but fluctuates annually depending upon needed and approved facility improvement projects. Major capital improvements related to city facilities are typically included in the City’s Capital Improvements Program and those amounts vary broadly from year to year. Employees reporting to the City Architect include Architect Section Head, two Development Specialist III’s, one Development Specialist II, one Senior Registered Engineer, and two Architects.



The Architect Section Head will assist the City Architect and project teams with designs for construction, renovations, and rehabilitations on municipal buildings and other public/private partnerships. The Architect Section Head will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process. Assists in designing interiors based on client vision and architectural needs and requirements, including, selecting interior design elements like furniture and finishes for office and laboratory spaces.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate for the ARCHITECT DIVISION HEAD will be an innovative licensed architect with excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated understanding of architectural practices, design, and construction; experience working in highly engaged public processes; and a commitment to sustainable building practices. The ideal candidate for the ARCHITECT SECTION HEAD will have experience of all stages of the design process, capable of taking day-to-day responsibility for at least major projects, operate within a team structure and will report directly to the CITY ARCHITECT.

The qualifications required for the ARCHITECT DIVISION HEAD position include graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters’ or Bachelors’ degree in Architecture and a Registered Architect (national or obtain State of Missouri within 6 months) with a current license. NCARB registration preferred. Must possess 6+ years of progressively responsible experience as a Registered Architect. Ideal candidates will also have design and large project management experience, excellent graphic and verbal communication skills, general construction experience, and be able to work independently to meet schedules, including a minimum of 2-3 years in a supervisory/management role.

The qualifications required for the ARCHITECT SECTION HEAD position include graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors’ degree in Architecture, or a related area, must be a Registered Architect (national or State of Missouri within 6 months), and possess 4+ years of progressively responsible experience as a Registered Architect. Ideal candidates will have design and project management experience, technical drawing skills, knowledge of building codes and regulatory standards, general construction experience, verbal communication skills, and be able to work independently to meet schedules.

Both candidates must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license and a safe driving record (as determined by the City); and establish residency within the Kansas City’s corporate limits within six months of appointment.  

Special Instructions

The starting salaries for these positions will be commensurate with the selected candidates’ qualifications, experience, and professional achievement with a starting range for the City Architect up to $146,520 plus excellent benefits, and up to $130,824 for the Architect Section Head.
