The Student Financial Center sub-division, within the Division of Student Affairs & Campus Diversity, houses two separate student service offices- the Student Financial Center (SFC) and the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFAS). This subdivision focuses on delivering student-centered engagement in an environment that is transparent, highly regulated, and compliance-driven under the leadership of an Assistant Vice President.

The SFC's focus is to provide centralized, individual financial case management and counseling to students, parents, and families. The SFC maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFAS) and Student Account Services (SAS) by providing a scalable, "one stop" shop approach to providing assistance with issues related to financial aid, scholarships, and student billing regardless of where the students and staff physically are.

In collaboration with the Director, the incumbent is responsible for planning, preparing, and coordinating offerings to support students and parents in understanding costs and available resources to pay for college.

Under the direct supervision of the Director, the incumbent will assist with designing and implementing training programs for OFAS, SAS, and Junior Counselors working that contain all relevant aspects of financial aid, scholarship, student accounts, and student billing information. The Coordinator will participate in the training work groups to ensure that training is of the highest quality and most effective possible given the diverse learning styles of the center's staff to be trained and the complexity of information disseminated.

The Coordinator will work with the Director and ASAII to be responsible for the student assistant talent acquisition process (recruiting, tracking, and interviewing job candidates and onboarding and training new employees.)

The Coordinator will function as an outreach liaison and coordinate office services for entities on and off campus, serving as the primary contact for disseminating information about the SFC.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Possession of this knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Specialized Skills
  • Excellent skills in communicating with prospective students, current students, parents, high school counselors, and other student service personnel while maintaining tact and professionalism in difficult situations.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise explanations to a student, parent, or colleague for the basis for decisions, and the details of the financial aid application process, academic progress requirements, etc.
  • Knowledge of scholarship, financial aid, and student billing-related deadlines and reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of financial aid programs, laws, rules, regulations, and scholarship/financial aid policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use developed and maintained automated student financial aid and scholarship systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret federal income tax transcripts and understand their relationship to the needs analysis process and federal verification requirements.
  • Accurately assess a student's current and potential financial and academic circumstances, be responsive to the student's unique situation, and provide appropriate recommendations for planning strategies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Financial Aid (FA) Module to administer financial aid and scholarships.
  • Experience working in a Financial Aid Department and/or Student Accounts at a CSU and using CSU developed CMS Baseline modifications to the standard delivered PeopleSoft Campus Solutions FA module.
  • Commitment to the core values and philosophy of student financial assistance (e.g., ensuring access to education for the economically disadvantaged) through work experience, education, or other experience or activities.
  • Manage multiple tasks in an environment of competing priorities through the use of effective organizational skills, successfully perform high volumes of detail-oriented tasks, and adjust to an extremely stressful, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships in circumstances that involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view, while behaving professionally with tact, restraint, and persuasiveness to achieve understanding and cooperation.
  • Exercise independent professional judgment without the benefit of guidelines, set policies or formulas, ensuring regulations and policies are followed while meeting the special needs of individual students
  • Ability to recognize potential problems and know when to consult with a manager on matters that have broader implications than can or should be dealt with independently.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs at San Diego State University.
  • Understand the role and use of automation in the delivery of financial aid and scholarships, to increase efficiency and accuracy and to provide excellent customer service.
  • Prepare and deliver informative, effective, and professional speeches/presentations, which include the use of PowerPoint software to present a professional image and message consistent with the values and mission of the SFC.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University system-wide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
