Job Description

Working as a Staff Engineer, Senior, you can expect to provide direction, guidance, training, and assistance to employees; assist in selecting new employees. Interpret, explain, and ensure engineering compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, resolutions, regulations, standards, specifications, policies and procedures. Provide information and assistance related to engineering contracts, construction drawings, land issues, development requirements, engineering projects, procedures, documentation, or other issues. Determine liability when questions of quality of construction or faulty publicly owned structures are disputed by the public; provide guidance to developers and engineers conducting or considering work within the Town; provide technical expertise to other departments; assist with preparation of staff reports. Review residential, subdivision, and commercial construction plans of community engineering projects and programs. Perform project management for engineering projects. Performs site visits or field inspections of projects and developments. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, payments, project plans, construction specifications, construction bids, stormwater detention reports, contract documents, right-of-way documents, public easements, agenda requests, agendas, engineering reports, cost estimates, pay requests, technical study reports, project schedules, project budgets, contracts, agreements, maps, plats, aerial photographs, laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, standards, manuals, catalogs, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Communicate with supervisor, Town officials, employees, other departments, developers, engineers, architects, surveyors, inspectors, consultants, property owners, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Attend meetings and makes presentations as needed. May assist operators at the water and wastewater treatment facilities in the performance of daily duties and work necessary for compliance of state regulations. May assist in management of annual utility maintenance projects including capital equipment purchases.

Job Requirements

Here is what you need to be considered for the position of Staff Engineer, Senior:

  • Must have Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field; supplemented by four (4) years progressive engineering experience; AND/OR
  • training involving civil engineering, engineering design, engineering plan review, surveying, and personal computer operations; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
