The City of Fresno, City Clerks Office is currently recruiting for two American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter/Translators. Under general supervision, incumbents interpret spoken passages from one language to another during meetings and/teleconferences; translate documents and other materials from one language to another; and ensures meaning and context are maintained.
Additionally, incumbents read through or listen to material in one language, ascertains understanding of the meaning and context of material and converts it into a second language ensuring preservation of the original meaning. In simultaneous interpreting settings, the incumbents render spoken/signed interpretation of material at time it is being spoken and interprets spoken/signed communications between English and sign language to accommodate community members. Incumbents conduct platform interpreting, including content that may be viewable via live and/or archived video. Incumbents may be required to team interpret for extended periods of time consistent with interpretation needs such as City Council or other commission meetings.
Interpreters must be able to communicate fluently in English and American Sign Language (ASL) and must demonstrate initiative, tact, and sensitivity to a diverse community.
These positions are expected to be full-time contingent upon Council Approval.

UNIT 3 Classification - The Fresno City Employees Association, Inc. (FCEA)
3% salary increase, effective June 19, 2023
HEALTH INSURANCE: The City contributes toward monthly premiums for PPO medical, dental and vision for employee and dependents.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary 457 plan with Fidelity Investments to increase your retirement savings.
VACATION LEAVE: Accrue (8-14) days per year.
SICK LEAVE: Eight (8) hours per month, available after 90 days
SUPPLEMENTAL SICK- 40 hours per fiscal year. 80 hours lifetime maximum
HOLIDAYS: Ten (10) City-observed annual holidays plus birthday and two (2) personal days.
SHORT TERM DISABILITY: Provided through California SDI program.
BILINGUAL PREMIUM: PAY: $100 per month
HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT: To reimburse retirement medical insurance and qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT: City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other CA public agencies. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits includes ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.

These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify:
High school diploma or GED equivalency; AND a valid certificate of accredited interpreter training; AND two (2) years of professional experience as an interpreter/translator, preferably in a public setting. One (1) year of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required certification.
ASL interpreters shall possess and continue to maintain a current national certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); possession of certification may be considered in lieu of certificate of accredited interpreter training.
NOTE: Please attach a copy of your RID or NAD certification to your application. Applications lacking this documentation may be rejected.
The selection process may consist of the following:
APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Applications submitted will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates may be invited to the Oral Examination. The selection will be based upon those applications which demonstrate the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation.
ORAL EXAM - 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related examination which may evaluate each candidate's fluency in American Sign Language; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Interpreter/Translator. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The Oral Exam date is to be determined.
Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the hiring department for further consideration. Selected individuals will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
