JOB SUMMARY
Cleans and maintains animal shelter facilities; provides for the health and care of animals; assists the public with reclaims, adoptions and/or other animal related matters; conducts routine clerical work; assists the vet services staff with routine procedures and performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains animal kennels, cages, and related equipment; washes bowls, utensils, and laundry.
  • Maintains supply inventory and stocking of facility areas with animal care supplies, including bowls, buckets, towels, litter pans, cleaning products, newspaper, leashes, carriers, and other miscellaneous items.
  • Responsible for tools and minor equipment maintenance for drains, hoses, brushes, squeegees, sanitizing tools, dishwasher, washer, dryer, animal handling equipment, etc.
  • Provides for the health and care, feeding, watering, bedding and bathing of animals; assists veterinary staff with routine medical procedures, preventative care and surgery preparation and procedures: administers medications, treatments, vaccinations, performs basic diagnostic tests and procedures, and monitors animal health.
  • Responsible for observing and reporting behavior and health concerns such as aggression, illnesses, internal/external parasites, injuries, changes in behavior, appetite, water consumption, eliminations or lack thereof and overall well-being of animals being housed.
  • Assists the public with animal interactions, adoptions, lost pets, reclaims and all other animal matters; processes adoption, reclaim and transfer paperwork; keeps inventory of animals, performs correspondence for lost/found pets, documents records, performs basic clerical tasks.

DECISION MAKING
  • Using judgment when handing or seeking assistance for handling in special circumstances.
  • Performing standard procedures in the absence of supervisor and seeking supervisor assistance when necessary.
  • Dealing, approving, processing adoptions, receive and return animals from/to owners, ability ro recognize animal behavior and health concerns and report accordingly, ability to understand/ accept shelter procedures (disposition/ euthanasia).
  • Ability to be self-sufficient and work independently.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One (1) year of customer service required.
  • Computer Skills - learn shelter application, accurately update and maintain records.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One (1) year of animal care facility work experience is preferred.

  • Interacts, communicates, and provides assistance to the public regarding a variety of animal related matters; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with outside agencies, volunteers, shelter staff, co-workers and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, walking and vision constantly; sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing constantly; hearing and talking frequently; crawling rarely.

Working conditions involves exposure to aggressive animals, zoonotic diseases, loud noises, hazardous chemicals, odors, hot water, and extreme weather conditions. Possible exposure to the rabies virus via animal bites/scratches (pre-exposure vaccines & booster offered at city's expense). Protective Equipment: Gloves (latex, leather, or cloth), rubber boots, ear plugs or muffs, eye protection, animal handling equipment.

Work Hours

Flexible hours 7 days a week, 15-19hr/wk. rotation mostly a.m.
(Full 5 hour shifts of 8am-1pm on 3 weekday mornings required, occasional weekends and holidays)
