The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, California, is seeking a full-time, Associate/Full Professor 12-month Department Head for its Animal Science Department.
This position has an anticipated start date of January 3, 2023 or July 1, 2023 but will be open until filled. The Department Head is a tenure-track position and will provide leadership for all programmatic and administrative functions including instruction, research, production units, and alumni and industry engagement. The Animal Science department consists of 18 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 6 full-time lecturers, 8 part-time lecturers, and 16 full- and part-time staff members who engage with approximately 820 undergraduate students.
This position will oversee the Animal Science Department in:
- Faculty and staff hiring, development, mentoring, and workload assignments
- Development of external funds and advancement
- Management of budget, facilities, and departmental resources
- Departmental curriculum development, assessment, and strategic planning
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts
The successful candidate may teach undergraduate and graduate courses and may engage in scholarly activities (i.e., research, publishing, grant writing) as part of professional development. Department Head appointments and 12-month assignments are made and continue at the pleasure of the College Dean. Tenure is earned only in the faculty portion of the position, which includes teaching, research, and service. Credit towards tenure at the time of appointment may be awarded depending on the candidate's years of teaching experience, professional development, and rank. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

- A Ph.D. in Animal Science, or a related field, or D.V.M., or other qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure
- Strong record of academic achievement and a strong commitment to teaching excellence
- Demonstrated experience in collaborative priority setting and decision-making
- Demonstrated ability to manage resources and solve problems with creativity and innovation
- Ability to interact with Animal Science and Dairy Science-related industry stakeholders in developing research and industry initiatives of local, national and global importance
- Evidence of institutional development such as fundraising, collaboration and contracts
- Outstanding written and verbal English communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Experience in successfully allocating, directing, and monitoring annual budgets
- Work within one or more commercial animal industries, preferably analogous to the Department's operational units: the J and G Meat Processing Center, Animal Nutrition Center, Beef Center, Sheep and Goat Center, Poultry Center, Swine Center, Oppenheimer Family Equine Center, Dairy, Creamery, and Veterinary Clinic.
- International experience or the desire to cultivate international partnerships

The Animal Science Department offers B.S. degrees in Animal Science and Dairy Science and minors in Equine Science, Meat Food Science, Poultry Science, Range Resource Management, and Dairy Science. The College offers an M.S. degree in Agriculture with a specialization in Animal Science. The Department manages commercial herds and flocks of dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry on over 6,000 acres with the support of several new facilities, including the recently completed Oppenheimer Family Equine Center.
