About these positions: Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is seeking to create a diverse talent pool for Arborist III & Arborist IV positions in the Urban Forestry Tree Maintenance Operations workgroup for future opportunities. This is a growing team dedicated to the mission of managing and ensuring Portland's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. Our urban forest consists of 218,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and 2.9 million private property trees. Portland is a Tree City USA for 44 years, a Tree City of the World and the Urban Forestry program is accredited by the Society of Municipal Arborists.

About the work for Arborist IV: The Arborist IV acts as the lead worker and has an advanced level of Arboricultural, climbing and leadership skills. This position is responsible for directing and overseeing all on site tree maintenance, equipment maintenance and emergency tree care operations including the more complex and difficult operations. The Arborist IV performs above-the-ground work in trees requiring rigging, climbing and the use of lifts and related equipment for arboricultural needs.

As an Arborist IV, you will:
  • Provide training and guidance to assigned staff and ensure compliance with department safety standards.
  • Oversee the inventory and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Direct or perform minor repairs, maintenance of tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Identify and assist in providing specifications for tools and equipment needed.
  • Research new techniques, equipment and procedures used in the care of removal of trees, making recommendations regarding their purchase and use.
  • Perform complex tree pruning and removals.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
This position responds to emergency call outs during and after scheduled work shifts.

About the work for Arborist III: The Arborist III is a skilled classification requiring a high level of arboricultural knowledge and tree care practices including tree climbing with ropes and saddles, operation of aerial lift devices and various types of ground operations. This position is responsible for conducting all on site tree maintenance including pruning, removal, planting, plant health care and emergency operations. All work is performed while employing the latest industry techniques, safety standards and equipment. The Arborist III performs above-the-ground work in trees requiring rigging, climbing, and the use of lifts and related equipment or arboricultural needs.

As an Arborist III, you will:
  • Perform standard tree maintenance and emergency tree operations removing hazards and fallen trees including during storm operations.
  • On occasion, be assigned to oversee on-site tree care activities, provide instruction and/or training to lower Arborist classifications and fill out daily work and field reports.
  • Examine trees for hazards and conditions, apply pesticides, and conduct ground duties as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
This position responds to emergency call outs during and after scheduled work shifts.
