Performs journey-level locksmith work.CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Locksmith Supervisor or a higher-level crafts supervisor. These positions are characterized by the performance of journey-level locksmith work in the installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of a variety of mechanical and combination locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, and other secured locations including jails and mental hospital wards. The work requires a knowledge of master key coding systems and the construction, operation and functional characteristics of locking devices, and skill in fabricating replacement parts, devising or changing combinations, troubleshooting inoperative locking systems to determine the cause of malfunction, and in neutralizing lockouts. Locksmiths typically work in the field and must exercise judgment in independently selecting work processes, techniques, and tools and equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Duplicates keys utilizing hand and electrically operated key cutting machines.
Issues keys and locks, and keeps related records.
Opens locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means; opens safes by manipulation and drilling.
Installs, adjusts, repairs, and rebuilds locks.
Changes safe combinations; repairs and rebuilds safe locking mechanisms.
Adjusts and repairs related door closing and locking devices, including panic hardware.
Establishes, expands, or modifies master key coding systems.
Changes key and cylinder combinations in accordance with changes in the master key system.
Repairs or rebuilds jail locking devices and mechanisms.
Operates machine tools such as a drill press, milling machine, lathe, or shaper in the fabrication or modification of lock and panic hardware parts.
Orders parts and supplies, as required.
Acts in a lead capacity, as required.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OPTION I:
Four years experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and combination locking devices and the maintenance of master key systems, one year of which must have been working within a journey-level capacity*. OPTION II:
Completion of a recognized**

of at least three years duration.LICENSE:

Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulation, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

To qualify, applicants must attach a photocopy of the records confirming successful completion and verifying the duration of the required training program at the time of filing or within fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of the application filing. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

This examination will consist of two (2) parts: Part I
A written test covering knowledge of General Locksmith Work weighted 30%. THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19. ONLY THOSE CANDIDATES WHO ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I WILL PROCEED TO PART II. Part II
A performance test consisting of hands-on practical performance test weighted 70%.CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
Applicants that have taken any identical test with the Sheriff's Department within the last twelve (12) months will have their test scores automatically transferred to this examination.
This examination may be used in the future for new examinations with the Sheriff's Department. Scores will be transferred to the new examination. Candidates may not be allowed to re-take any identical test for at least twelve (12) months.ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months. SPECIAL INFORMATIONSUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH.
Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
