Description: Position Summary
The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.
The Department of Athletics has within its scope of responsibilities the operation of an athletic equipment facility that receives, distributes, maintains, fabricates, launders, and repairs athletic equipment and supplies for these 18 team sports. Athletic Equipment Services (AES) also operates two other equipment rooms that are maintained to service three sports beyond the main equipment area. Athletic equipment includes but is not limited to all equipment, apparel, and gear provided to varsity athletic teams sponsored by the Department of Athletics.
The Assistant Director position, under the general supervision of the Director of AES, has the primary responsibility for oversight and coordination of the daily activities related to all Olympic team sports, staff assignments, receipt and distribution of athletic equipment and supplies, laundering, and maintenance of inventory records. The incumbent assumes all departmental management and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Director of AES. This position is responsible for assisting in the development and monitoring of departmental budgets, expenditures, and preparation of reports. Responsible for assisting in the enforcement of NCAA, university, and State policies and procedures as they relate to the athletic equipment facility. The position regularly acts as a liaison between the department and student -athletes. Works closely with all team sports' contacts to resolve problems or issues arising in the day-to-day operations of the department. The incumbent often makes independent decisions in evaluating and establishing work priorities under pressure and demands of constant deadlines.
The incumbent must have the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment. As the lead worker, the incumbent is expected to exercise professional, courteous behavior and good judgment when interacting with student-athletes, staff, coaches, visitors, and coworkers. The incumbent must be computer-literate and possess the knowledge and ability to oversee a wide variety of software applications on PC's. Required to have the physical ability to lift materials and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds per package (boxes, bags, etc.).
Duties may be reassigned intermittently depending on department needs, deadlines, and workload. Frequent travel, variable work schedules, and weekend work are required.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego. Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field
- Three years working experience in athletics equipment environment, including at least one year in Division I athletics equipment.
- Initiative, good judgment, and the ability to efficiently perform duties and responsibilities with a minimum level of supervision are important requisites for this position.
- Hands-on management experience with operational responsibilities in an athletic equipment room at the collegiate or professional level preferred.
- Four or more years working experience in athletics equipment environment including two or more years in Division I athletics equipment preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with Front Rush inventory computer program.
Licenses and/or Certifications Required
- Proficiency in MS Office, including Word and Excel.
- Competency with athletic equipment inventory software.
- Experience using sewing machines and performing clothing repairs.
- Demonstrated experience of strong proactive customer service.
- Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to lift materials and supplies up to 70 lbs.
- Compliance with all NCAA, conference, and San Diego State University rules, policies, and procedures is of paramount importance.
- All position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.
Certification from the Athletic Equipment Managers' Association, (AEMA) or ability to take and pass AEMA certification exam within one year of hire. Compensation and Benefits

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work.
