The Job The Department of Public Health is recruiting for Communicable Disease Investigators II who serve as a lead worker and resource for Communicable Disease Investigators I and other support staff. Communicable Disease Investigator II will assign, review, monitor and provide guidance on communicable disease case investigations; conduct complex case investigations and case coordination activities; interpret policies and goals of the communicable disease unit for subordinate staff; interview individuals, gain compliance with public health laws, and investigate sources of communicable diseases; coordinate with private and public medical authorities with respect to diagnosis and treatment of individual cases of communicable disease; counsel patients regarding the symptoms and effects of communicable diseases, and ensures that all appropriate steps have been taken for appropriate case investigation, intervention, and follow-up. May be assigned in STD/HIV screening programs at health centers or other sites and follow up on patients who have a positive test to obtain an evaluation to determine a diagnosis and treatment outcome when necessary and provide appropriate referral services. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required. A valid California Class C driver's license and automobile insurance must be produced at the time of hire and maintained. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment. Minimum Requirements Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the following options: Option A: Two (2) years of experience as a Communicable Disease Investigator in San Bernardino County. Option B: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in health science, public health, nursing, or epidemiology AND two (2) years of experience performing communicable disease investigations in a Public Health Department. Alist of coursework must be submitted with the application. Option C: Four (4) years of full-time experience performing communicable disease investigations in a Public Health Department. Note: Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Desired Qualifications Thorough knowledge of: Modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of communicable diseases Diagnostic tests for communicable diseases Public Health laws and regulations relating to the control of communicable diseases Interviewing techniques to extract information in a tactful manner Written and oral communications for gathering, evaluating and presenting information to individuals and groups Ability to: Mentor, train and provide technical guidance to a unit of Communicable Disease Investigators Conduct quality assurance activities for a unit of Communicable Disease Investigators Prepare and maintain confidential records and reports of communicable disease cases Understand and identify medical facts in reporting communicable disease cases Work cooperatively with persons from various social-economic groups, private physicians and other staff in the investigation of communicable diseases Applicants bilingual in Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.
