Salary Range: $5,732.00/month to $8,176.00/month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,732.00/month to $6,954.00/month.

About the Position

Under the general supervision of the Director for DISC and the Affinity Student Centers in the Division of Student Affairs, the Black Student Success Center (BSSC) Coordinator creates a safe and welcoming environment to promote academic success for our Black student population. The Coordinator also provides leadership, strategic planning and a collaborative environment with campus partners to provide easy access to resources which support the educational access, success, retention, and graduation of Black students. In coordination with campus partners, the coordinator provides academic and personal guidance to Black students; develops, designs, updates, and implements campus educational programs, services and training specific for Black students; gathers feedback and research to implement best practices; completes outreach to expand current services; and builds and maintains partnerships with on- and off-campus resources. As the program grows, the incumbent may provide lead work direction to professional staff members and student employees. This position will provide leadership and guidance to the campus community regarding the Black student population. The incumbent has overall responsibility for Black Student Success Center student programs, budget, planning, marketing, publicity and measurement of program effectiveness.


Black Student Success Center Development & Coordination
  • Develops, leads, designs, implements and evaluates effectiveness of programs and services that provide student support, advice and referrals related to various issues and challenges unique to Black students.
  • Provides racial identity development opportunities for Black students.
  • Provides leadership development opportunities for Black students.
  • Creates and conducts assessments of student services and programs with the goals of assisting Black students, enriching their campus experience and enhancing their academic success.
  • Conducts research of regional and national best practices, as well as gathers feedback from campus community members and students to develop on-going programs to address evolving needs.
  • Collaborates with various campus departments to improve outcomes related to the inclusion, retention, and graduation of Black students.
  • Develops and implements a communication plan to provide prospective, incoming, and enrolled Black-identified students with timely information on programs, resources, opportunities, events, activities, important deadlines, and academic and co-curricular enrichment opportunities.
  • Oversees the preparation of data, progress and analytical reports as requested by the appropriate administrator.
  • Seeks and composes grants for external funding and supports other fundraising efforts.
  • Develops and maintains the website and other materials to provide current and timely information to Black students, their families and allies.
  • In conjunction with the appropriate administrator, oversees and maintains the budget for operating expenses.
  • Provides lead work direction to volunteers, professional and student staff, as needed.

  • Oversees the creation and organization of programs and services in support of the academic success, retention, and graduation of Black students particularly those who come from underserved backgrounds.
  • Establishes a community among Black students by offering an ongoing program of activities to increase student contact, involvement, achievement and overall satisfaction.
  • Coordinates and/or provides appropriate training sessions, workshops, and resources for administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national resources and organizations to establish a network of programs, services, and referrals in support of Black students.
  • Represents university at both on- and off-campus events for Black students.

  • Collaborates with campus partners to coordinate accessible academic advising for Black students.
  • Tracks the progress of Black students through routine meetings and interactions.
  • Develops on-going strategy for outreach and recruitment to continue to expand the services for current Black students.
  • Makes referrals to various campus partners including student support services, SANKOFA, Career Services, Counseling, Financial Aid, Housing, etc.
  • Designs and maintains processes to track academic success of student participants.
  • Collects information and provides data on academic needs of Black students.
  • Prepare oral and written reports, as needed, on issues and concerns of Black students related to campus academic programs.

Other duties as assigned
  • Assist at annual University events which could occur on a weekend or evening, e.g. Preview Day, Welcome Day, Education Summit, etc. as assigned.
  • Serve on project teams and recruitment committees.
  • Participate in department task forces and committees as designated.
  • Attends conferences and keeps abreast of new developments in issues addressing Black students, access and equity programs that serve this population.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in student affairs, equity and inclusion and/or related field(s).
  • Experience and ability to work with a diverse student and campus population.
  • Experience advising and developing students.
  • Ability to work independently and represent the department at designated university functions.
  • Ability to interpret federal, state, and university policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and through the use of various technologies including the web and social networking platforms.
  • Ability to work with web-based programs and applications for communication, data gathering and analysis.
  • Ability to establish a cooperative working relationship with students, campus departments, and the public.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with multiple deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to produce and maintain extremely visible programs with political sensitivity.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions in a somewhat noisy environment.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Excellent delegation skills and the ability to provide lead work direction, train, evaluate and provide feedback regarding professional and student staff.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Working knowledge of student leadership development issues including policies, procedures and practices to produce educationally and philosophically sound programs.
  • Working knowledge of student development theory and research.
  • Ability to research and apply research in related topics.
  • Ability to employ positive advisement and counseling skills.
  • Ability to act and use excellent judgment in a fast paced, service-oriented daily operation.

Minimum Qualifications


Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.


Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge
  • Two-years of experience in campus life, student leadership, diversity or identity-based centers, advising, or student support services.
