The Detention Officer I/Crewman performs specialized law enforcement work to protect the interests, persons, and property of county residents and the general public being served by inmate work crews and ensure that the supervised inmates' constitutional rights and welfare are safeguarded. Work involves transporting inmates to and from various work sites and supervising inmate work crews. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary according to areas of assignment. Employee must exercise alertness and independent judgment in dealing with unusual situations. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of jail work.

Examples of Duties

Transports inmates to and from road work sites.
Guards and supervises road crew trustees engaged in the maintenance of county roads (i.e. cutting or trimming trees, mowing grass, patching potholes, etc.); instructs trustees in the proper use of equipment and hand tools such as chain saws, wood chippers, road patching machines; and ensures that inmates properly perform the work assigned.
Ensures that trustees are provided with proper safety equipment and supplies such as gloves, safety glasses, winter clothes, etc.
Ensures inmates are fed and secure.
Administers prescription medication as ordered by the doctor and non-prescription medication as necessary.
Performs first aid for trustees for such things as cuts and bruises sustained while working on the roads.
Supervises trustees and participates in performing preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles.
Observes inmates' demeanor to determine mental state and the possible need for treatment and/or closer observation.
Searches inmates upon return to Jail.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School diploma or GED is required for this position.

Must possess a Class C Driver's License issued by the State of Texas.

May be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with "N" endorsement issued by the State of Texas within six months.

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Must attain certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer within one (1) year of employment.
