THE POSITION The Equipment Mechanic III works closely with the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor in the daily operations as well as provides assistance and training to Mechanics in the Shop when complex repairs arise. The ideal Equipment Mechanic III candidate should be able to perform highly technical mechanical work on a wide variety of municipal equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Schedule and set priorities for maintenance and repair work on City equipment. Make initial inspection on equipment to be repaired and diagnose defects. Generate work orders and evaluate repair work on its completion. Inspect, adjust and replace necessary parts such as: valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies and cooling, fuel and exhaust components and ignition systems. Perform highly technical work on hydraulic systems, fabrication projects, and rebuilding assignments. Order necessary parts, develop estimates and determine which supplier can meet needs. Assist in the supervision and training of subordinate personnel. Assign and schedule work of a fleet maintenance shop. Maintain records and write reports and memorandums. Coordinate maintenance and repairs with other City departments and divisions. Oversee compliance with work rules, safety, and environmental regulation. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of municipal equipment. Operating principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fueled engines. Operating principles of light and heavy duty vehicles and mechanical equipment. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work. Supervisory methods and training techniques. Electronic control systems typically found on modern automotive equipment. Ability to: Locate, correct and adjust defects in light and heavy duty vehicular and mechanical equipment. Schedule and set priorities for repairs and preventive maintenance to be accomplished. Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems. Order and identify parts necessary for repairs. Read and interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and electrical schematics. Competently and safely operate and care for tools used in vehicle and mechanical equipment repair work. Supervise, evaluate, lead and train others in the equipment maintenance field. Lift up to 60 pounds. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Experience: Five years of experience in the general maintenance, servicing, and repair of vehicles and equipment, including two years of experience on heavy duty gasoline and diesel driven equipment. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Substitution: Successful completion of vocational education in the automotive, truck, or heavy equipment field may be substituted for up to two years of the work experience on a year-for-year basis.
