Position Description

Seasonal Firefighters assist in wildland and structural fire suppression, fire prevention and education, medical and hazardous materials emergencies, pre-suppression, hazardous fuels management, wildland fire aviation, equipment, and facility maintenance, and forestry and fire law enforcement activities. Under close supervision, positions allocated to this class serve as crewmembers on an engine crew and receive training in performing all or part of the duties outlined in the series concept.

Nevada Division of Forestry Air Operations provides the Sierra Front, Central Nevada, and Lake Tahoe Basin with an effective initial attack resource to contain wild land fires quickly. Large fires around the state are supported by aviation modules when moving to extended attacks. The program is comprised of fire aviation professionals consisting of Pilots, Mechanics, Fuel Truck Operators, Helitack leadership and Seasonal Firefighters. As a Seasonal Firefighter on the helitack program, you are responsible for safe and effective fire response via helicopter and employing direct and indirect handline construction tactics on active fires with aviation support. You will be required to work effectively with all members of the program to maintain a high-functioning team environment. We encourage career growth in aspects leadership, self-motivation, fire behavior knowledge and resource management activities. To maintain NWCG qualifications, Seasonal Firefighters are made available nationally to provide training and support of large fires around the country. Seasonal Firefighters will gain knowledge and skills relating to natural resource management activities during time between fires. We’re looking for motivated, self-starting, team players with an appetite for crew comradery and adventure!

Incumbents are required to pass a work capacity test which consists of a three (3) mile walk, carrying forty-five (45) pounds in less than forty-five (45) minutes.

These positions are scheduled to start in April 2023.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of construction, logging, ranching, forestry, or natural resource conservation experience which included the use of various power and hand tools.
