ABOUT OUR OPPORTUNITY
We are excited to hire an Animal Control Officer I to join our team! This person will be responsible for enforcing County ordinances governing the care and keeping of domestic animals and livestock in an effort to maintain public safety and welfare. They are also responsible for capturing, caring for and/or euthanizing animals as directed.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (40 hours per week); must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and available for on-call as needed.
This position is open until filled with applications being reviewed weekly Essential Duties & Responsibilities - Receives and responds appropriately to public complaints and requests for assistance regarding animal control problems; dispatches calls to other officers as required. Valid state driver’s license required to perform this responsibility.
- Captures and transports stray and unwanted animals to appropriate facility; sets traps for animals as necessary; captures animals posing a threat to human safety, including those suspected of rabies infection. Valid state driver’s license required to perform this responsibility.
- Quarantines, euthanizes, or provides medical attention to animals according to department policy and procedures and applicable regulations.
- Cleans and maintains animal shelter, picks up shelter supplies; cleans and repairs traps and other equipment. Feeds, waters, and provides exercise for impounded animals.
- Investigates animal cruelty cases and enforces related laws; assist law enforcement personnel in situations involving animals as requested; issues warning citations for violations of ordinances governing the care and keeping of animals.
- Promotes and processes the public adoption of shelter animals; assists the public in the search for their animal or adoptable one. Supervises the work of inmate workers as assigned.
- Provides public education regarding animal control; explains ordinances related to the care and keeping of animals. Maintains records of daily work activities.
- Operates a vehicle, traps, restraining/capture devices, two-way radio, hand tools, and telephone. Exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Performs routine clerical duties as required, including but not limited to greeting and assisting customers, preparing forms, reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, and copying and filing documents.
- Attends training, meetings, workshops, as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills, and required certifications.

About You -
Education & Experience: Completion of high school/GED equivalent and up to one (1) year work related experience.
Certifications & Licenses: - V alid state driver's license required.
- Valid CPR & First Aid Certification.
- Possess or be able to obtain Animal Control Academy certification.
Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Attributes Knowledge: - Knowledge of practices, policies and procedures pertaining to the operation of an animal shelter.
- Knowledge, or ability to learn quickly the State of South Carolina and York County Laws, Ordinances, rules and regulations pertaining to animals.
- Knowledge of practices and procedures in safe handling of animals alive, injured or deceased.
- Knowledge of York County’s lifesaving and public outreach initiatives and the ability to explain participation to the public.
- Knowledge, or ability to learn quickly Chameleon database for animal control and shelter operations.
Skills, Abilities & Attributes: - Ability to recognize a wide variety of animal health problems.
- Ability to express ideas, concepts, and plans effectively, both in oral and written forms.
- Ability to plan and organize demanding and varied activities and prioritize appropriately is required.
- Skilled in self-motivation to meet the job responsibilities and strives to anticipate work to be done and initiates proper and acceptable direction of work for completion with minimal supervision and instruction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical & Dexterity Requirements: Requires work involving: walking, sitting, talking or hearing 1/3-2/3 of the time; standing, gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling under 1/3 of the time; lifting up to 25 lbs 1/3-2/3 of the time, and lifting up to 100 lbs under 1/3 of the time.
Vision Requirements: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point). Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships) Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
Potential Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The job may risk exposure to indoor environment, outdoor environment, moisture and/or humidity, fumes, chemical hazards, other fractious animals prone to biting and scratching.
