Job Description

THE CITY
Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917, and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 700+ employees with an overall operating budget of over $235 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services including Fire, Police, Community Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, and Transportation.

The Department: Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS)


The PRCS Department consists of different programs and divisions including the Recreation Division and Senior & Social Services. These divisions provide a variety of programs for children, young adults, seniors and residents with disabilities. Program activities include homework assistance, computer lab, crafts and games, special events and more.
THE POSITION

The Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department is now accepting applications for the following positions:

Recreation Leader I: $15.00 - $17.08 hourly

Recreation Leader II: $ 18.05 - $19.91 hourly

Senior Recreation Leader: $21.24 - $23.42 hourly

General Duties:

Recreation Leader I: Under close supervision, assists with facilitation of youth programs such as seasonal camps and after-school programs, leads and oversees recreation activities at a playground or other recreation facility, and encourages participants' interest in arts, games, sports, dance, crafts, table games, and special events. Exercises responsibility for the issuance, care, and use of recreation supplies and equipment. Maintains control at the location to which assigned. Under close supervision, prepares the recreational facility for sports games including lining fields, keeping scores, maintaining statistics, and officiating on occasion. Assists in the operation of leagues, tournaments, meets, and the daily programmed activities at the recreation facility. Collects money for concessions. Keeps the facility in a clean and orderly condition, ensuring supplies are adequately stocked. Set up and breakdown of rooms scheduled for meetings and/or recreational activities and events in a timely manner. Performs related duties as required.

Recreation Leader II: Plans, coordinates, and supervises recreation activities at park, playground, after school program, teen or senior center, the Plunge or other recreation facilities Interprets recreation programs and policies to the public and enforces departmental policies. Prepares the recreational facility for activities. Investigates complaints, suggestions, and requests concerning recreation programs and makes recommendations to the Recreation Specialist. Inspects the maintenance of facilities and equipment used in recreation programs to ensure their adequacy and safety. Assists with Citywide special events. May assist with the maintenance of recreational facilities, as needed. Performs other related duties.

Senior Recreation Leader: Plans, coordinates, and supervises recreation activities at a park, playground, after-school program or other recreation facility. Interprets recreation programs and policies to the public and enforces departmental policies. Investigates complaints, suggestions, and requests concerning recreation programs and makes recommendations to the Recreation Specialist. Prepares and presents concise and comprehensive written and verbal reports to a Recreation Specialist or Recreation Coordinator. Inspects the maintenance of facilities and equipment used in recreation programs to ensure their adequacy and safety. Assists with City wide special events. May assist with the maintenance of recreational facilities, as needed. Senior Recreation Leaders may supervise and train Recreation Leaders. Performs other related duties.

Work Schedule:

Part-time hours working approximately up to 28 hours a week. Schedules will vary depending on the needs of the department.

Minimum Requirements:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the knowledge, skill, and ability would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill, and ability would be:

Recreation Leader I: Candidates must be at least fifteen years of age and possess a valid work permit, as applicable.
Recreation Leader II: Graduation from high school or equivalent and either 1) Completion of 30 college semester units OR 2) One (1) year experience in providing recreation, community, cultural, or social program activities.
Senior Recreation Leader: Completion of 60 college semester units OR (2) years of experience in the area of recreation, community or social services.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license if assigned to drive.

Required Certificates(s) for all levels:
Candidate will be required to possess certifications in First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within six (6) months of employment.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
Examination procedures for all levels: Suitability for the position will be evaluated by an application review. This evaluation will be qualifying, i.e., it will determine who will be invited to the *Oral Appraisal Interview. The Oral Appraisal Interview will evaluate training, experience, and personal qualifications and will be weighted at 100% (tentatively scheduled during the first week of every month).

Selected candidates must provide the following:
1) Copy of a TB certificate that is no older than two (2) years from the date of application upon job offer
2) Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. at the time of appointment.
3) Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license if assigned to drive.
