The Denver District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer in the City and County of Denver. The District Attorney’s Office prosecutes state misdemeanor and felony cases in Denver’s County and District Courts, provides assistance to witnesses and victims of crime, and maintains an active community education and crime prevention program. The Office provides training for police officers and sheriff’s deputies regarding legal issues in criminal justice.

The Mission of the Denver District Attorney's Office is to prosecute crimes and investigate potential crimes on behalf of the people of the State of Colorado, and in doing so, do justice, advocate for victims’ rights and advise and consult in the deterrence and prevention of crime; to ensure the open, evenhanded and humane administration of justice professionally and completely. The Denver District Attorney’s Office employs approximately 280 people working on behalf of the citizens of Denver-110 prosecutors, as well as investigators, victim rights advocates, legal secretaries, and other staff. The elected District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer in the City and County of Denver and is responsible for the prosecution of violations of Colorado State Laws. The current Denver District Attorney is Beth McCann.

The Denver District Attorney's Office prosecutes state felony, misdemeanor and petty offense cases in Denver County, Juvenile and District Courts, provides assistance to witnesses and victims of crime, and maintains an active community education and crime prevention program.To accomplish its work, the District Attorney's Office hasseveral divisions, units and special programs.

On a day-to-day basis, theDeputy District Attorney will:
  • Maintain a caseload, including making appropriate plea offers, litigating motions and preparing cases for trial
  • Partner with other deputies on cases
  • Partner with members of Denver Police Department and other community agencies
  • Assist victims of crime through the criminal justice system
  • Periodically serving on call to provide legal advice to Denver Police Department’s homicide unit
  • Appear in court as a trial lawyer and maintains and manages a full trail docket
  • Assures that the case and trial priorities established by the District Attorney are met
  • Applies sound legal practices and judgment and ensure that accurate and sufficient case documentation is preformed
  • Preforms other duties as assigned or requested by the District Attorney or Assistant District Attorney


About You

  • Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree or Bachelor of Laws Degree
  • Experience: None
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
  • License/Certifications: Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court at the time of application
