Positions allocated to this class are non-peace officer positions assigned to provide security in and around County facilities and properties of public agencies contracting Sheriff Department security services. Positions in this class are distinguished from the lower level class of Security Assistant, Sheriff by the requirement to carry a firearm while in the performance of their duties and more extensive knowledge of departmental security techniques, policies and procedures, and the exercise of independent judgment in providing security at both County facilities and other public facilities as designated by the Sheriff. Incumbents must distinguish between circumstances in which counseling, admonition and explanation will serve to maintain a peaceful environment or where the intervention of law enforcement personnel is necessary, and respond to and/or report situations appropriately. Incumbents of this class serve a nine (9) month probationary period during which they receive training in the care and use of firearms, proper firearms safety procedures, and related training in Department regulations and legal limitations on the use of firearms or other forms of force under Section 831 of the Penal Code.
Essential Job Functions
- Works a fixed post or tours the inner/outer perimeter of a facility or campus to detect or prevent individuals or groups from committing acts, which are injurious to others or to property within or around a facility.
- Intervenes to terminate injurious acts, conducts searches of individuals for weapons, illegal devices, or contraband and detains individuals for further investigation or arrest where circumstances and conditions warrant such action.
- Directs visitors to personnel and services within a facility.
- Investigates questionable acts or behavior observed or reported on premises and questions witnesses and suspects to ascertain or verify facts.
- Pursues, apprehends and detains persons observed injuring others or damaging property, and detains suspects pending transportation and booking by local law enforcement agency.
- Participates, with sworn personnel, in securing facilities and conducting searches.
- Intervenes on behalf of lower level security personnel and/or assists them in the absence of a supervisor or sworn personnel.
- Ensures that only authorized employees, vendors or other appropriately identified persons are permitted access to closed or restricted areas and detains unidentified or unauthorized persons.
- Responds to reports of ill or injured visitors or employees and notifies supervisors or other appropriate personnel if additional assistance is necessary.
- Explains and interprets organizational procedures and practices to lower level security personnel.
- Utilizes fixed and hand-held scanning devices to detect unauthorized weapons or devices.
- Monitors alarm systems and electronic surveillance equipment and responds to locally activated fire, burglary or other alarms.
- Relays reports of bomb threats to the appropriate law enforcement jurisdiction and participates in organized searches.
- Reports safety hazards, malfunctioning equipment and other such matters to appropriate personnel.
- Writes daily activity, incident and non-employee injury reports.
- Operates miscellaneous equipment and/or motor vehicles including use of bicycles as required in the conduct of routine patrol or to report to alternate assignment posts in accordance with emergent staffing needs.
- May issue non-moving citations for routine infractions such as parking violations.
- Drives throughout Los Angeles County as needed.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSAGE
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent high school proficiency or higher education. Evidence of equivalent high school proficiency includes having successfully passed the GED, TASC, HiSET, or CHSPE.
Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by one of the approved organizations listed by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) https://www.naces.org/members or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) http://aice-eval.org . These organizations are private enterprises who charge a fee for their services.
Successful applicants will be required to submit sealed transcripts and/or other education documents during the background investigation. LICENSE
A valid California class "C" driver license is required to perform job-related essential functions.
Out-of-state applicants must have a valid driver license from the state in which they reside at the time of application and will be required to obtain a California class "C" driver license or above by the time of appointment.
Successful applicants will be required to submit a copy of their valid driver license during the background investigation. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. An applicant's driving record within the past 36 months will be evaluated. PHYSICAL CLASSIV - Arduous

Additional Information WORK CONDITIONS
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) operates seven days a week, 24-hours a day, and has locations throughout the greater Los Angeles County. Appointees must be willing to:
- work any shift.
- work overtime and consecutive shifts.

The examination will consist of a computer based multiple-choice test weighted 100%, assessing writing clarity, vocabulary, spelling, writing grammar, reading comprehension, deductive and inductive reasoning, and data interpretation. You must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the multiple-choice test to be placed on the eligible register. If you fail the test, you may retake the multiple-choice test once every three (3) months. The multiple-choice test is not reviewable by applicants per Civil Service Rule 7.19. If you have participated in the examination process for any one of the LASD's Law Enforcement Job Family (LEJF) positions and did not achieve a qualifying score, you must wait three (3) months after the date of the test to reapply. Reapplying continuously will override the existing information and will cause a delay in the processing of the most recent application. Only the most current application will be considered. RESCHEDULING PROCEDURE
You may be given the opportunity to reschedule the multiple-choice test within a three-month period from the date of your application. MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST SCORE
The Security Officer multiple-choice test score is valid for twenty-four (24) months. SCORE TRANSFERS
If you meet the selection requirements for this position and achieved a qualifying score within the last 24 months from any of the LASD's LEJF examinations, your multiple-choice test score will be transferred to the LEJF position(s) for which you have applied. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

policy for its employees for the following:
- use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
- use of marijuana with or without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge. DISQUALIFICATION
The background questions in the Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) are utilized to ensure you meet the standards of the LASD. If you fail any background question(s) you may be disqualified from all LEJF examinations for which you have applied and will have to wait a minimum of twelve (12) months from the date of disqualification to reapply. If during the hiring process, the LASD determines that one or more components have expired prior to hire, you will be required to complete the expired component(s) again. PRE-INVESTIGATIVE QUESTIONNAIRE
You will be required to complete a Pre-Investigative Questionnaire that will consist of questions regarding narcotics use, theft, arrest history, domestic violence, and driving history. Examples of disqualifying factors include but are not limited to: Failure to appear to scheduled appointments, felony convictions, job related misdemeanor convictions, certain serious traffic convictions or patterns, suspended license, driving under the influence, poor credit or employment history, substance abuse, and active criminal probation. PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT (PHS)
You will be emailed a link to complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) and will be required to submit specific documents (i.e., driver license, social security card, birth/marriage certificate(s) etc.). It is your responsibility to bring both original documents and copies to your background intake appointment. LASD representatives will verify the copies against the original documents and return all original documents. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
A thorough background investigation will be conducted which includes, but is not limited to; discrepancy interviews, a Live Scan (fingerprint search), polygraph examination, law enforcement agency checks, and residence/employment checks. If you complete the background investigation you may be selected for the position and will be extended a conditional offer of employment prior to the psychological and medical evaluations.
- If you are disqualified from the background investigation you may be ineligible to reapply for any LASD position(s) for a minimum of twelve (12) months.
The psychological evaluation consists of a four (4) hour test. Once you have completed the test you will meet with a psychologist.
- If you do not pass the psychological evaluation, you will be ineligible to reapply for the position for a minimum of twelve (12) months.
The medical evaluation assesses physical ability, ensuring capability to participate in the demanding duties of the position.
- If you do not pass the medical evaluation, you will be ineligible to reapply for the position for a minimum of twelve (12) months.
Successful completion of the mandatory five-week long LASD sponsored in-service training program is required prior to final appointment. APPLICATION AND FILING INFORMATION
